Genealogy - Hereditary tendencies

The Greathead family has a great history in the field of engineering and innovation. New links to further websites may prove that there is something to this thought. It is also possible that some more pictures may be gleaned for the write-up on James Henry Greathead.

I recently discovered that Greathead's relative, whether a second generation cousin or nephew unclassified as yet, not only designed but built the Victoria Falls Bridge ordered by Cecil John Rhodes. Mayfield Greathead comes to mind but I forget his Christian name. Mayfield built much of the railway system in Southern Africa and much of it still in use to this day. Information updates

I have added photos that I took during the London Olympics and also added information that is now available on the web from various sources. As time becomes available I intend to perfect the look and text of this page mo a suitable standard. My personal interest is that this is about my great, great grandfather and he deservesrecognition for his part in engineering history as we are now around 150 years after his serious works began and they stand today as testament to his genius. There is much about him that is not generally known that we, his descendants do know and have not shared, so I would like to reveal the family history that was not published in journals in some tangible way that the link between victorian engineers was an incredible journey into the future for them and a strong link to the past for most of us now living. The photos Justinc wanted to post are no longer needed now. Thank you, friend. If anyone has any suggestions or improvemnts, please let me know. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Its looking much better now, thanks! I see that on the house picture you wrote "Limited release for Wikimedia use only." - this is not an acceptable license, and the picture cannot be used. However, in the UK if the picture was taken from a public place you do not need permission from the owner. So either the picture needs to be removed or the license changed. I am studying civil engineering in England and the subject of tunnelling is quite relevant. The argument that Greathead and Barlow's ideas are related had lately proven to be false by discovery of the minutes of a meeting in Nov 1895 in which Greathead was questioned by the chairman of the Institution of Civil Engineers about Greathead's previous knowledge of Barlow's 1868 provisional patent to which Greathead denied any knowledge. This would have been reasonable because a provisional patent is not generally published until accepted. I am trying to find out from the London patent office whether Barlow's provisional patent was ever accepted and published. If it was not, then Greathead's patent succeeds in being the first patented design ever built in Europe. It cavity be discerned immediately whether Alfred Beach patented his shield design in America. Beach came up with his design because he met Isambard Brunel in the States and became familiar with the rectangular design for tunnelling just as Barlow had under Isambard's tutelage. It was definitely Greathead's idea for a modular shield design for offsite construction that is still in majority use today. The nasty Greathead-Barlow-Beach argument

It is such a shame that so many academics have misguided ideas that Barlow's patents were used by Greathead and since have published their works as facts in light of evidence that this was certainly not the case. Should we not create a new section entitled "Barlow-Greathead-Beach tunnelling shield controversies" that specifically deals with conspiracy theories by providing the oldest factual evidence on record to put the global misconceptions to rest?

Every once in a while, a Barlow fan comes along and changes the facts to their version but, with the addition of this new "conspiracy theorists" section to enlighten people as to available facts in chronological order of publication with a summary of the resultant data, such changes become inconsequential. I admit that my familiar links are biased against the Barlow fans because they are baseless beyond proven records yet I am an avid Barlow supporter because his works changed a great deal of transportation history and educated my great great grandfather who instituted my father and additionally, myself to take up engineering for the betterment of the universe.
