Oberlin came from 18th century Alsace, when the region's ethnicities and politics were rather complex. He has been known by a variety of names in English: Jean-Frédéric, Jean Frederic, Johann Friedrich, John Frederick, John Frederic, & J. F.. Oberlin College, the American institution named after him, refers to him as John Frederick. The Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition on which this article is based names him Jean Frederic but describes him as a German pastor. The modern Britannica calls him Johann Friedrich. Considering the variety of designations for him, titling the article J. F. Oberlin and listing the various names within the article seems the most neutral solution to me.
