Ivory Coast at the 2009 World Championships in AthleticsCôte d'Ivoire at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics – Sports are a special context for naming purposes. For instance, we use "Chinese Taipei" in sports contexts even though it is "Taiwan" in nearly all non-sports contexts. Although there was a recent contentious RM discussion that resulted in the country itself moving to the title Ivory Coast, in sports contexts the name Côte d'Ivoire is used almost exclusively, and the title here should reflect that. Oppose - Per your arguments, the "official" country name is not necessarily what we call the country. In the case of Taiwan, it is a compromise name as both PRC and ROC claim to be China. --Education does not equal common sense. 我不在乎 02:11, 31 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose. Only a few countries have a sports name that is different from their common name, and I don't see any reason to believe that this is the case for Ivory Coast. Here is are run down of Ivory Coast soccer scores on ESPN, and here is a story about Ivory Coast in the current Olympic Games. No mention of "Côte d'Ivoire" in either article, not even as explanatory gloss. Kauffner (talk) 13:22, 31 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
