Untitled edit

Isabel is NEVER referred to as Isabel de Vere in any contemporary document, not only because she had been married previous to her marriage to a younger son of the earl of Oxford, but also because she was the Bolebec heiress. Even when a widow, the sources ALWAYS call her Isabel de Bolebec, countess of Oxford. That is how she is often to be found in indexes of sources. Naming her "Isabel de Vere" is therefore misleading and while it may match modern usage, it makes mincemeat of the usage in her day. DeAragon 05:52, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Children and Age edit

Given the year her father died and the year she was widowed, Isabel would have been at the end of her reproductive years when she conceived and gave birth to her son and heir, Hugh de Vere. That alone makes the possibility of a daughter unlikely. There is no mention of a daughter in any early thirteenth-century documents; as with most others who have been suggested as a Vere daughter, the assertion came from later and inaccurate genealogies and antiquarians. Her age when she gave birth to Hugh also makes it highly unlikely that Isabel was the eldest of Hugh de Bolebec's two surviving daughters. Parents edit

The mother of Isabel is unknown. Her father died in about 1165. The Hugh Bolebec who was the husband of Margery de Mountfichet was alive well after 1165.
