Talk:Ironies of Automation

Latest comment: 10 months ago by CCIronies in topic Biography

Greetings. We continue as a society to struggle with the ironies of automation, as seen recently in the Boeing 737-Max. Given the importance of automation, AI, and related topics, I think it is appropriate that the author of one of the most influential papers on the topic ever written be recognized for her notability.

Simply searching on Bainbridge presents a mystery. As stated in the article, images do not appear, nor biography. I do not know if she is even still alive. I hope that others with more knowledge of her personally will contribute and clarify matters.

Respectfully,

@Charles T. Betz: I've found her website - it's fully 20+ years old but maybe there is some useful info here. –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 16:50, 5 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Roscelese: Thanks! Charles T. Betz (talk) 12:04, 6 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Notability edit

Notability for this topic is claimed under WP:ACADEMIC "The person's research has had a significant impact in their scholarly discipline, broadly construed, as demonstrated by independent reliable sources." That test alone is amply validated by the freely available (at this writing) sources cited. Charles T. Betz (talk) 13:08, 6 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Biography edit

It's claimed in https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/files/64900473/FULL_TEXT.PDF that she worked on the team of one E.R.F.W. Crossman. This may be a lead. Charles T. Betz (talk) 13:08, 6 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Curiouser and curiouser. Crossman (s/he) is also a cipher. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/331910677_Who_is_or_was_E_R_F_W_Crossman_the_champion_of_the_Power_Law_of_Learning_and_the_developer_of_an_influential_model_of_aiming. Charles T. Betz (talk) 13:42, 6 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
That paper is freely available from the publisher at https://link.springer.com/article/10.3758/s13423-019-01583-z It has many detail about him. Simon Grant (talk) 11:57, 20 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Bainbridge's personal website: https://web.archive.org/web/20160612163728/http://www.bainbrdg.demon.co.uk/

That was her website: as is noted on the main page, she has a current site here: https://www.complexcognition.co.uk/ Simon Grant (talk) 12:00, 20 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
The demon website no longer exists (nor does demon). The new version of the website includes a brief 'biography' in the sense of the sequence of jobs Bainbridge had. The Home page of that site also includes a section on Ted Crossman. CCIronies (talk) 00:15, 26 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
P.S. somewhere in all the material on the new site, there’s a comment on the photo linked below ! CCIronies (talk) 00:20, 26 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

There is also a photograph of her here: https://www.imago-images.com/st/0081509398 Yaxu (talk) 22:00, 13 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
