Flag edit

Do we know what flag Persia used? This flag is also a likely canditate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Early_20th_Century_Qajar_Flag.svg, per the Wikipedia article on the flag of Iran--189.33.40.151 (talk) 21:15, 26 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Persia, not Iran edit

On a much more important note, Iran was known as Persia until the Pahlavi takeover. This needs to be changed.--189.33.40.151 (talk) 21:18, 26 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Iran at the 1900 Summer OlympicsPersia at the 1900 Summer Olympics — The country was both commonly and officially known as Persia in the English language until 1935. Persia is therefore more correct for this article; the next time the country would compete would be in 1948, by which time the name "Iran" was firmly established. --84.92.117.93 (talk) 18:53, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose Records for the 1900 Games are sketchy, so we have few reliable sources to go by. (e.g. there is no mention at all of "Persia" in the official report). Also note that at the time, competitors were not necessarily associated with National Olympic Committees (representing their nations) as they are now. Therefore, these claims of participating nations were added retroactively. All the reliable sources that we have that consider Freydoun Malkom as representing his country call it "Iran", despite the historical inaccuracy. Using "Iran" in the name of this article, per those sources, is an example of verifiability, not truth. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:36, 14 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Should this arrticle even exist at all? Iran/Persia had no formal team, and it would seem more sensible to have an article on Freydoun Malkom, the one Persian competitor, than this innacurate article. 84.92.117.93 (talk) 18:12, 14 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose Nomination is wrong. The country was known as Iran or Eran since 5th century BCE. Persia was a name used for the Persian Empire which originated from Persis. Iran is the correct term here. warrior4321 22:02, 14 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
That's not really true, Persia has been long established as a name of Iran in the West, regardless of its original epitomology. The country would not have been known in France, where the Olympics were held, as Iran, because until 1935 that name was not applied in the West for the country; Perse (Persia) would have been used. I really dislike having an article titled "Iran at the 1900 Summer Olympics", because, despite a few weak sources using the term "Iran", there was absolutely no Iranian involvement in the Games. One athlete of Persian/ Iranian ancestry competed, but he was a foreign national. 84.92.117.93 (talk) 22:02, 15 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
That's quite true actually. Do you have sources that say countries called Iran, Persia at the time? As well, please see Iran (word). warrior4321 23:19, 17 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
