Unreliable quote? edit
We quote the IRR in saying Hailsham died in 1987. He didn't and, one way or another, it makes a nonsense of the quote. We should either remove it or make some sort of clarification even though that might give the appearance of editorialising. - Sitush (talk) 05:29, 25 December 2020 (UTC)
- Good point, Sitush. Other obituaries (e.g. The Times) also use that quote, though if the reference to Hailsham dying in 1987 originally came from Macdonald it must have been meant ironically, since that was the year Hailsham ceased to be Lord Chancellor, aged almost 80, having held the post for longer than any one else in the 20th century. I have adjusted the quote to end on "Over my dead body!" and added a sentence about Hailsham ceasing to be Lord Chancellor in 1987 and Macdonald finally becoming a QC in 1988 – appointed by "the more fair-minded Lord (James) Mackay of Clashfern", according to Geoffrey Robertson in the Guardian obit.
