No support for iPhone 4? edit

I guess it's time for that long awaited upgrade for many users who are still on 4. Also, I saw an article that many people will be forced to upgrade their iPhone since iOS 8 no longer supports it. Giggett (talk) 23:15, 3 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

What's your point? MrCellular (talk) 23:45, 15 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Promotion?!?! edit

I'm not familiar with articles around Apple products, but I just checked on the Windows 8 article, and it doesn't have nearly the level of detail about product specs that this one does. That laundry list looks like both advertising/promotion for Apple, and a free specialized service to Apple users not in line w/ Wikipedia's information mission 'for the masses.' I propose killing that box, and letting some knowledgeable person replace it with a summary of the new system's features. Regards Tapered (talk) 04:06, 5 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

How about you get the Windows 8 page to the same level instead of whining aroound? MrCellular (talk) 08:33, 5 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
I agree with you, Tapered, the list of new functions just seems like an advert. Some sections are not even written from a neutral point of view. Also rating this article about some mobile operating system that is not even released as High-importance on the project's importance scale is way over the top IMHO.   –Frankly, my dear... I do give a damn! 18:54, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Do you think we should remove information that has already been announced by Apple? We have an article about iOS 8, obviously we're going to include what we know. If it bothers you, I suggest making contributions to the Windows 8 article like MrCellular suggested. If the consensus was that the article was written like an advertisement, we could put an advert template at the top of the article, but I don't feel like there's enough consensus. Messages will be automatically deleted? edit

This is the last sentence of the lede: "Voice and video messages will be automatically deleted unless the user saves them for future reference." Is there a source for this that anyone is aware of? -- BCorr|Брайен 00:30, 1 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

I found this, which seems to be the source. Could someone verify this as a reliable source and add it to the article? Absolution3241 (talk) 11:01, 8 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Never mind, have added source myself. Any objections, raise here. Absolution3241 (talk) 11:10, 8 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Dodgy sources, what to do? edit

Reference #31 ("Install iOS 8 Beta Without UDID Registration". June 3, 2014.) seems to be a redirect now (Should we cry SEO?). Anyway. The original information seems to be in the archive. How do I update the reference? Boiert (talk) 21:24, 16 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

"Should we cry SEO?"? Or "somebody dropped their domain registration".
"How do I update the reference?" By picking a particular archived instance, and using its URL for the "archiveurl=" parameter to {{cite web}} and the archive date for the "archivedate=" parameter, as per my edit to do just that. Guy Harris (talk) 23:37, 16 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
So that is how it's done, thank you for enlightening me. Boiert (talk) 08:06, 17 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Source #36 is also almost entirely nonsense. While there are many reputable sources for people with iPhone 4S problems under iOS 8 (New York Times, anyone?), this is just a collection of vague assertions and unimplementable suggestions ("use a 3rd party app to keep RAM under control" -- WTF does that mean?) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.173.127.110 (talk) 14:26, 30 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Where is it? edit

I realize that the day's not over, but the page says it will be released today. The business day is just about over, and it's still not released. Is the page wrong? Is Apple having problems? --198.24.31.70 (talk) 19:35, 17 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

It was offered on our iOS 7 iPad by going to Settings > General > Software Update, and Apple's iOS page no longer says "coming soon" as it did for me earlier today. Where are you looking to see whether it's been released? (Oh, and it's only about 3/4 hour past noon where I'm typing this, which is also what time it is in Cupertino....) Vandalism edit

I wonder why the protection template for vandalism has been removed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MrCellular (talkcontribs) 08:08, 30 September 2014‎ (UTC

It was removed by a non-human, with the edit comment "removing a protection template from a non-protected page". The edit that protected the page had the edit comment "Protected IOS 8: Persistent vandalism ([Edit=Allow only autoconfirmed users] (expires 07:31, 29 September 2014 (UTC)) [Move=Allow only autoconfirmed users] (expires 07:31, 29 September 2014 (UTC)))", and I think 7:31, 29 September 2014 (UTC) is now in the past, which is presumably why the bot removed the template. Guy Harris (talk) 08:42, 30 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Well, I'm aware of the history and I think it needs to be extended. MrCellular (talk) 10:24, 30 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Then request further protection at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. Guy Harris (talk) 18:29, 30 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Moto G 2014 edit

Your topic is extremely informative. To further on your topic of problems with iOS8, here is an article on how to fix those problems http://www.gottabemobile.com/2014/10/07/moto-g-2014-release-continues-in-the-u-s/ Hannah Elyasi (talk) 14:37, 20 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Unless, of course, you want to fix the problems in some fashion other than getting a non-Apple phone. Guy Harris (talk) 18:27, 20 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Edits About the iOS version history edit

Look, in iOS beta versions, DO NOT ADD YOUR OWN REQUESTS!!! to their respective sections. An example from the template is Must improve performance on iPad (3rd and 4th generations) [1]. A telltale sign of this is the use of the word "Must", like the writer is hoping that Apple will do this, but is not part of the change log. Please do not do this, as this is not a fact confirmed by the beta change log, which can easily be accessed by a quick Google search. Plus, refrain from placing performance issues to other parts of the article, since that is mainly opinion based too. Head to the talk page to talk about it. P.S. I will report you to a admin if this continues. Kobepedia (talk) 15:52, 30 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

I actually think most if not all of the version history needs to go... it's a direct violation of Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information#4—version histories are not supposed to be this detailed. It might be defended as "useful" by some, but it certainly isn't encyclopedic. Mention a few of the major improvements in prose if necessary, otherwise the level of detail is way too high.   czar  03:00, 12 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Promotional edit

While I agree that way too many sections highlighting each new feature of the operating system has somehow found its way into the article, the description of the features themselves have been written in an encyclopedic manner, complying with the Neutral Point of View. --Unnivava (talk) 15:11, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Removal of version history tables edit

This content is duplicated on the History of iOS page since the subst and delete outcome for the templates for discussion: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2015_February_7#IOS_History_Templates. Maintaining two separate change logs on two pages is unnecessary. NeoGeneric (talk) 10:35, 18 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

"Problems" section edit

This article contains a large part of text in the Problems section based on a forum post. While the text is interesting and the problem seems real (though it dates back several versions of iOS), a forum post is not a reliable source and I'm removing it. --Steven Fisher (talk) 01:13, 25 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Reason edit

This is the reason why iOS 8 is unavailable for iPhone 4: Many of the new features in iOS 8 rely on hardware (such as Bluetooth LTE) which your phone does not have, and it would run very slowly. You would not be happy. I found that on the Apple Web site. 216.145.89.11 (talk) 22:29, 19 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Yes, OS vendors often don't make updates available for older hardware, as it requires more CPU/memory/etc. than the older hardware has. Not at all unique to iOS 8; Apple drops support for older machines with some OS X releases, and my first-generation iPhone doesn't support iOS 4 or later.
