Change of name from Hadagali to Hoovina Hadagali edit

  • @MPGuy2824: The official name of Town and district is Hoovina Hadagali. Hence town page in Wikipedia is named Hoovina Hadagali. Election Commission picked short form of the name. Even in short form it should be Hadagali. Not Hadagalli. This is not the first time. EC did the same with Bagewadi in the past. There are two Bagewadi's in Karnataka. Villages are many. But towns are 2. Hire Bagewadi in Belgaum district and Basavana Bagevadi in Vijayapura (Bijapur) district. EC had earlier named Assembly constituency as Bagewadi for both, considering short form. This place is commonly called Hoovina Hadagali and the guidelines state for WP:COMMONNAME: "Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's 'official' name as an article title; it generally prefers the name that is most commonly used (as determined by its prevalence in a significant majority of independent, reliable English-language sources).". Same happened with other places. Madras was renamed as Chennai and locals, websites started referring to new name. Same with Kolkata, Thoothukudi and Mumbai. Whereas many places in Karnataka has Wiki pages in English titles. Bangalore was not renamed as Bengaluru even after both State and central Govt renamed the city. Same with Mysore - Mysuru, Tumakuru - Tumkur, Hospet - Hosapete, Shimoga - Shivamogga, Bijapur - Vijayapura. Most recently Allahabad - Prayagraj. It made a typo while drafting final rolls and named it as Hadagalli. However, this typo was fixed as Hadagali by State election commission (see [3]). Hence, Hoovina Hadagali is the official, popular and common name of both Taluk and Town, only EC named the assembly constituency as Hadagali. I understand that the town and taluka are named so, but you'd improve your case by finding one or more sources (ideally English-language) which mention the constituency as "Hoovina Hadagali" -MPGuy2824 (talk) 07:25, 16 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
