I don't understand why the address in the lede is listed as Waiakoa. Is that a leftover from earlier erroneous placement at 9177 Kula Highway? The church is almost within sight of the Kula Post Office. Joel (talk) 07:01, 4 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

No, it looks correct to me. On neighbor islands especially place names can rarely be precise. Kula, Hawaii happens to have an article, although it still needs clean up. Kula to locals seems a vague term for "somewhere on the westernish slopes of Haleakalā". Waiakoa is more specific community where the church claims it is from its web site. USG maps confirm the place name, although it does not seem to be a CDP name, so does not have an article. See U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: Waiakoa which lists Waiakoa as a populated place with coordinates that match.

Now here is something odd, though: U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: Kula is listed as a CDP, and from the CDP map it might be centered around here. Coordinates look like the PO a bit to the north of the church. But the Kula article does not have the usual infobox and demographic info, and there is no Kula in the CDP template for Maui. Remember the CDP boundaries wer have are from about 1998; the area probably grew since then. Also the address might have come from the NRIS which was from the 1983 nomination - no, the nom form says just "Lower Kula Road, Kula". The 9177 Kula Highway address seems the mailing address for the Parish office given on their web site. So as corrected the site of the building seems more appropriate.

Ah, fact-finder does not see a CDP named Kula, and now I see why. It seems it was added for the 2010 census. The GNIS is continuously updated, but census site is still on 2000 data, which show a CDP of Pukalani north of here, but not Kula yet. W Nowicki (talk) 18:06, 4 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for giving it a thorough checkout. It looks as if Kula is on its way from vague geographical designation to more centralized CDP, with its relatively new PO, community center, and elementary school dating to 1964 and consolidating tiny outlying schools in Makena, Ulupalakua, Keokea, and Kealahou. I noticed similarly some locations that are now on the outskirts of Kihei that are still assigned to Puunene as the (once and fading) nearest town/PO. Joel (talk) 19:06, 5 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
