Article Title edit

I just renamed this article from Hollywood, Portland, Oregon back to its original name, Hollywood District. Google test:

  • Results 1 - 20 of about 19,400 English pages for "Hollywood District" -wikipedia +Oregon
  • Results 1 - 20 of about 25,400 English pages for "Hollywood District" -wikipedia +Portland
  • Results 1 - 9 of about 15 English pages for "Hollywood, Portland, Oregon" -wikipedia

I just renamed this article again back to its original name, Hollywood District, which is the name by which it is most commonly referenced (see above). There is no guideline that says the name should be something as odd, unprofessional and inconsistent with Wikipedia naming conventions at WP:NC, WP:NC(CN) and WP:D as Hollywood, Portland, Oregon. --Serge 22:40, 6 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

I know this could be considered a year late, but...its improper to do a Google search for "Hollywood, Portland, Oregon" as people don't use that phrase. "Hollywood, Portland, Oregon" is just for our disambiguation purposes and neighborhood naming conventions. That being said, given the use of "Hollywood District", I'm not saying the page needs to be moved. P.S. Is there a Hollywood District in Salem? I remember seeing a street sign for it in north Salem. I agree that a Google search on "Hollywood, Portland, Oregon" isn't a valid criterion for a page move. There is a Hollywood District in Salem, such as it is: http://www.oregonlink.com/then_and_now/hollywood_district.html It used to be more of a going concern, but urban renewal took care of that. Its not the name of one of the official neighborhoods in Salem, but is enough history there [1] that disambiguation of the Portland article might be in order, as there is probably enough material for a Hollywood District (Salem, Oregon) article. And I'm sure there are other places in the world known as "Hollywood District". It would probably be a good idea to bring this up at Wikipedia:Requested moves. Hollywood District edit

  • Hollywood was incorporated as a municipality in 1903. Among the town ordinances was one prohibiting the sale of liquor except by pharmacists and one outlawing the driving of cattle through the streets in herds of more than two hundred. In 1904, a new trolley car track running from Los Angeles to Hollywood up Prospect Avenue was opened. The system was called "the Hollywood Boulevard." It cut travel time to and from Los Angeles drastically.
  • By 1910, because of an ongoing struggle to secure an adequate water supply, the townsmen voted for Hollywood to be annexed into the City of Los Angeles, as the water system of the growing city had opened the Los Angeles Aqueduct and was piping water down from the Owens River in the Owens Valley. Another reason for the vote was that Hollywood could have access to drainage through Los Angeles´ sewer system.
  • With annexation, the name of Prospect Avenue was changed to Hollywood Boulevard and all the street numbers in the new district changed. For example, 100 Prospect Avenue, at Vermont Avenue, became 6400 Hollywood Boulevard; and 100 Cahuenga Boulevard, at Hollywood Boulevard, changed to 1700 Cahuenga Boulevard.
  • The Hollywood District (originally Hollyrood, after the Scottish Holyrood) is a neighborhood of NE Portland, Oregon renamed for its historic 1920s era Hollywood Theatre.

I do, hereby, demand some reason, purpose, justification, logic, why this title should be assigned to some whatever in Oregon. I can justify why it should not be:

  • It is not the oldest.
  • It is not the most well known.

article rename, again edit

I just moved the article from "Hollywood District" to "Hollywood District (Portland, Oregon)" to make way for disambiguation at Hollywood District. The Portland neighborhood does not appear to be clear wp:PRIMARYUSAGE for the title. I note that the Hollywood, Los Angeles, California wikipedia article describes the more famous Hollywood as a "district", and there are several wikipedia-notable Hollywood historic districts now covered in the dab page.

About the name for this Portland neighborhood, i am indifferent whether it should be kept with parenthetical disambiguation or moved back to previous name "Hollywood District, Portland, Oregon". There is an RFC discussion about which of these neighborhood naming formats is best, going on now at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (geographic names)/Archives/2009/October#RfC: Article titles for US neighbourhoods. doncram (talk) 17:32, 25 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

– This article has bounced between titles before, but does not seem to have had a formal WP:RM discussion. As noted in one of the previous discussions, Hollywood, Los Angeles, is described in some sources as a "District", and there are also others on the disambiguation page. I do not believe that throwing an ambiguous term like "District" after an already-ambiguous place name is sufficient disambiguation. Note that most incoming links already redirect through the proposed title.
