Introduction

This is my current check list for restructuring this article. I spent last summer putting down the majority of the info seen today and have occasionally fleshed parts out and found relevant cites when other people have inserted info. However until now I haven't had chance to come back and complete the job. West Ham Utd F.C. timeline since 1895

• 1* I'm of the opinion the side scroll bar seen on the main site is a good idea, poorly implemented. Unfortunately I'm not so savvy with the "EasyTimeline"[1] stuff. Having tinkered with it a bit I've produced a better effort (in my opinion) to the right, but (depending on your screen size) it could easily get out of hand (and screen width) if I put in all information. I have corrected the colours, but it may be a matter of breaking into era's to coincide with the "chapters" of West Ham history.--Koncorde 20:38, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

• 2* Unfortunately since the split with the main page, a lot of the historical information on West Ham has become asynchronous/asymmetrical with conflicting info or poorly condensed historical information meaning it's about as much use as a chocolate teapot. There's whole chunks that need a rewrite on West Ham United F.C. and some of it that could be salvaged for incorporation here.--Koncorde 20:38, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

• 3* As I'm not that old (yet) I have little recollection of pre-86 football. As such digging around for information is a difficult task. I think if any links are found that include any information then it would be helpful to simply list them here. Although Wikipedia isn't a link depository, for the sake of writing a text useful sources should be shared. Any almanacs, annuals, biographies etc that nobody wants anymore I'd be willing to take off your hands if it'll assist writing a more coherent piece.--Koncorde 20:38, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

• 6* Think introducing a "kit through the ages" might be interesting (similar to Tottenhams). Not sure how to elicit all the correct colours though and there's no hoop socks option. Relationship with OCS

I've added a citation request for the link between OCS and TI/WHU. "Commonly held" needs some backing up. Whilst I do not profess to know everything (or even most things) about the Hammers, as a local resident and life long and long suffering fan I would expect to have heard someone mention OCS. I never have. Doesn't mean it is wrong; but I have my doubts. WillE (talk) 20:25, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Hello WillE. Sorry, it really shouldn't have said "commonly held", that's just poor writing on my part. A large number of Old Castle Swift players worked at the Ironworks. There are no formal links between the clubs, they're wholly unique and separate, however without the existence of one it's unknown if the other would have come about. The clubs are inextricably linked however - OCS was the previous tennant, and several of their existing players subsequently went on to play for TI. The OCS article lists the players involved in the transfer. I'll locate the citations later tonight if I can.Koncorde (talk) 21:00, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the response, Koncorde. I seem to remember recording my reservations on this topic way back, but they seem to have disappeared. I agree that that the moving of some/a lot/a majority of players from OCS to TI makes them significant, but I'd be wary of inadvertently giving the impression that OCS were actual forerunners of WHU. Found 'em - on the OCS page.

As a life long Hammers fan and local boy, I've never heard of any association between OCS and West Ham United. Even reading the article as it is, it doesn't sound like the two are related. One club folds, another forms and takes over the ground, and some local players join. Marriage of convenience, yes, worth noting, probably, but not the same club in my view. A citation is thus requested for the reference to West Ham United. Equally, the castle in the badge has been said locally to have referred to Anne Boleyn's castle, but I don't recall ever seeing this recorded anywhere.

I was careful to list it as pre-history, so the intention was never to say that OCS "is" West Ham, only that West Ham didn't pop out of a can as a ready-made team. Spyride's was working hard on the other history articles and barring an exchange of sources I left those to him (so I never saw your comments otherwise I would have responded).

There's no evidence that Mr Hills had any thought of a football team until the demise of OCS, but he was operating a few other sporting endeavours for his men around the same time. An opportunity spotted and taken by Mr Hills it seems. The links between the two teams are pretty evident, but given the formative years of football at the time it'd be wrong to portray this as a Halifax Town A.F.C. to F.C. Halifax Town type of rebranding (which is a more accurate representation of the Thames Ironworks > West Ham Utd relationship) as so many teams folded or merged, or changed locations wholesale back in those days. This letter from 1962 connects some of the dots in an ad hoc fashion.[4]

With regards to the Castle on the badge, I think these images conclusively seals it for being a link to "Green Street House" often referred to as Boleyn Castle[5] originally[6][7] however the modern design owes more to the more stylised castles featured on military badges such as those for the Essex Regiment, or even a throwback reference to Arnold Hills himself[8] (hard to see, very tenuous, but the castle in the heraldry is very similar). Pre-1904 the badge was something simpler[9]

No offence taken, btw. I prefer to be challenged on the things that I type, than to have glaring errors. Unfortunately struggling to cite the badge in anything other than a really quite amateur detective way. Trying to avoid "Original Research" when very little has been actually done about the subject isn't an easy task. Hopefully I can get a reply from John Helliar over at WHUFC.

By the way, if you feel you have anything to contribute historically then please feel free to edit away or flag up statements that you think need citing across the larger article. Most of the modern stuff would be quite easy (though I'm of the opinion much of it needs culling a bit). Koncorde (talk) 15:45, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Syd King

Syd King was never a director of West Ham. He was secretary and manager 1901-1931. Who is Len Bowen mentioned?REVUpminster (talk) 21:00, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Regarding Len Bowen, from the "Thames Ironworks" 1899-1900 season there is:

"On 5 July 1900 they reformed under the new name of West Ham United F.C. and accepted an offer of the Southern League place left vacant by Thames Ironworks F.C.. Len Bowen, a Welsh clerk at the Iron Works Company was appointed as the first West Ham United club secretary. Bowen had previously written Thames Ironworks match reports for the Thames Iron Works Gazette, also known as TIWG."

Spyrides who provided a lot of that historical info would have been the original contributer probably for both statements. I agree, King was the Secretary rather than Director. Not sure of the significance of Bowen. Koncorde (talk) 22:45, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
