Population?

The article states that the island was abandoned in 1930 - but not stating whether it has been repopulated or not. The Rockall article states that it was later done in 1957. Can we be more clear about this issue? Dinkytown (talk) 22:20, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Why was it abandoned?

There's an account of the actual evacuation, but no information for why such a decision was taken. 86.173.119.75 (talk) 18:07, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Name ‘Hirta’

No Gaelic word begins with an ‘H’! Ref: “Faclair Dwelly’s Gaidhlig Gu Beurla Le Dealbhan.” Cambayne (talk) 13:59, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

The likely candidate is the Norwegaian word “Hyrde” (shepherd); if so this would have applied to the largest island shepherding the others.0 Cambayne (talk) 16:57, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

The name St Kilda is probably derived from Norse: søt kilde (sweet source); referring to the springs on the island. Cambayne (talk) 10:52, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
