Leslie Dwyer edit

Can someone add him to the cast list, FCOL???????? GMS.

Title edit

The story was good. The idea is great. The title? YUCK! Sounds like something Wilson might say. 71.111.215.224 22:36, 12 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

What utter nonsense.
Which Wilson?Bob 22:50, 12 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wilson Wilson, duh (Home Improvement). I still think the show's name is bad. 71.111.215.224 02:20, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, considering this is a Perry-Croft sitcom page, I naturally assumed you meant Sergeant Arthur Wilson. That said, have a look at Wilson for some other possibilities! I've never seen Home Improvement. Probably a good thing...I assumed before looking it up that it was some sort of UK daytime DIY show. Bob 08:48, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm an American, so I've never even heard of this show until I went to TV Ark. It's OK. 71.111.215.224 16:37, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I see. It's a good site, TV-Ark - it's really useful for title sequences and series information. Actually, I'll put that link on the main page if you like - thanks. Bob 16:56, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

By the way, I couldn't read the title for the episode open on the site. What does it say? 71.111.215.224 23:36, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I see what you mean - I could make out the first word "only", so checked on an episode list [1] and apparently it's called "Only the Brave", which was from series 8. I haven't seen much beyond series four though, so I can't tell you what happens. Bob 00:28, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. 71.111.215.224 12:45, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

South coast? edit

Is the camp really meant to be on the South coast from series 2 onwards? There's no overt mention of location in series 2, 3 or 4, but there is a bus marked 'Wivenhoe' (indicating the East coast) and Ted says the majority of campers are from the Midlands and Yorkshire (making the East coast much more likely). Jess Cully 13:44, 12 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • In episode "Together Again" when they travel by train to the camp for the 1960 season, Yvonne makes a comment about how the train service is poorer since nationalisation, beginning a remark "When it was the London North Eastern..." which would indicate the camp is on the East coast, which fits the view that the camp is located in Essex. Niki2006 (talk) 19:37, 23 September 2008 (UTC) Oops, someone clearly didn't know that the LNER ran up to Aberdeen over the Forth Rail Bridge! Yorkshire/Lincolnshire coasts are home ground for LNER.Tylexman (talk) 17:11, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Probably not set in Yorkshire, as the local newspaper, mentioned in several episodes, is titled the East Coast Gazette - any self-respecting Yorkshire-based media title would not be shy about declaring their origins from God's Own Country! Though occasional references are made to seaside towns on the East Anglian coast so Lincolnshire is a possibility. Niki2006 (talk) 22:16, 23 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Seasons/series etc... edit

It's very hard to follow when character changes occurred when they're detailed by the fictional season, not the actual series of the show (and List of Hi-de-Hi! episodes gives no indication as to which is which) - is anyone able to put the actual series in? Timrollpickering (talk) 13:48, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well Series 1-5 was set in the 1959 season and Series 6-9 was set in the 1960 season. But the list of episodes page contains details of the first and last appearances of certain actors User:greg78uk (talk) 18:32, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
It was far better when we had a cast list, which easily listed all the cast and characters and in italics/brackets what series they appeared. This far page is getting very messy now, and is far too detailed (birth dates of characters - where do these come from).--UpDown (talk) 18:58, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I dont agree, in a series like Hi-de-Hi, the back stories of the characters is very important to the storyline and I think this provides a vital guide to those back stories. Whether or not a separate page should be made for the Characters details like there is for example with the 'Are You Being Served' characters is another matter. As for the birth years of characters, most of those were worked out from when their ages were mentioned on the series so they were counted back from the year that that episode was set in.User:greg78uk (talk) 21:59, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
A basic back story yes, but not this long story like these. And the birth years are not really actually given, they are just worked out from educated guesses. They have no relevance and should be removed. A basic cast list was a great addition to the page and should be added back in. The episode list is all is a state - it should use the episode list standard template and should not have a trivia-style "Notes" section.--UpDown (talk) 08:10, 18 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
The back stories included on here only contain details of the characters early lives which are relevent to the plot of the show and to the understanding of those characters. As for the birth years, if it is said in an episode set in 1959 that a certain character was for example 56 years old that day then we can quite actuaratly say what year they were born and again one of the running themes through the show was the attitudes of the characters to being stuck in the holiday camp and a good part of that depended on their ages and at what point in their lives they were at. Almost all the pages dedicated to the Perry and Croft sitcoms have detailed character biographies, because the sitcoms were written such, that the character back stories were very important to the understanding and development of the show (as I said before, some have the detailed character biographies on a separate page and just a basic cast list on the main page, which is a possibility here). I cannot comment on the episode list as I have had nothing to do with it.User:greg78uk (talk) 17:45, 18 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
You are actually wrong about the birth years. Giving someone's age in a certain year does not definatley say what year they were born, because it depends whether they have had their birthday that year or not. This page is, frankly, in a very bad state. The cast list should be re-instated and all the character sections reduced.--UpDown (talk) 07:58, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

The character Mr Partridge was based on a Punch and Judy performer, wasn't he? edit

Wasn't the character Mr Partridge, played by Leslie Dwyer based on the personality of a Punch and Judy performer who was angry and bitter towards children afer a boy wasn't able to look at him while he was looking at his audience through a gap in a curtain? I seem to remember hearing on TV that due he was so angered and filled with hate by the boy not being able to look at him and having to look down or away that the feelings of anger and hostility toward the boy remained with him and affected his character. If I'm remembering right then this should be added to the Mr William Partridge information. Its the first thing I have heard of it, it certainly wasnt part of the Hi-de-Hi storyline, so for something like that to be added to the page you would need to have the source of where it came from. User:greg78uk (talk —Preceding undated comment added 23:56, 13 November 2009 (UTC).Reply
