Francis Joy a realtive, founded the Belfast News Letter in 1737 which is still published to this day and is a staunchly Unionist newspaper, refelcting the Presbyterian change of perspective after the Act of Union and the relaxation of the Penal Laws.

If it was founded in 1737 as a staunchly Unionist newspaper and remained so post 1801 it didn't reflect a change of perspective.--213.94.205.109 11:09, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

A. doesn't say it was founded AS a Unionist paper; it wasn't. Its orientation was political reform, & it supported the parliamentary reform movement of the 1780s. It only became Unionist, as A. points out, post 1801.

Point of correction: Robert Emmet was not a founding member of the United Irishmen; his older brother Thomas Addis Emmet was.Hawkms (talk) 06:14, 26 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
