This man's name is pretty obviously Peterson instead of Pieterson. To prove that there is a Hector Peterson Memorial Library in Cape Town, South Africa and finaly you can read his name at the Hector Peterson Memorial. --212.114.164.185 06:31, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

A google search for "Hector Petierson" soweto -wikipedia returns only 19 hits. With Peterson there are over 10,000. Move to Peterson ? Wizzy…☎ 11:20, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

Hector's family insists that the correct spelling is Pieterson. The offical name of the first museum in Soweto is the Hector Pieterson Memorial Museum according to the telephone book. See Joburg council's site for Pitso or Petersen or Pieterson? --Jcw69 14:10, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

Date format

This is a South African article - so why are dates (June 16, 1976) in US format, rather than (16 June 1976) SA format? I didn't want to just go ahead and make the changes, but if there is agreement ...

Death Toll

I am a bit confused. This article states that,

"By the end of that fateful day 566 children were dead."

The article History of South Africa in the Apartheid Era, while refering to the exact same incident that,

"The official death toll on the day was 23 dead, but some placed it as high as 200."

Please clarify as to which is correct. It may be that I am reading one or the other incorrectly. If so, please clarify. Thank you.

The article "Soweto Uprising" dealing with the actual events of that day states: "The number of people who died is usually given as 176, with estimates of up to 700." It includes 3 references for this information. South African Government Information website claims approximately 700 deaths during the weeks following this event. Age

This article appears to be biased. Example: when discussing the photograph that was taken of him. why does it say that they ran toward the photo-journalist "for publicity?" How do they know exactly the motive behind it? Could it not have been nothing more than the photographer happened to see them, and snapped the photo (as is often the case is such events). The entire article sounds as though it was written by a white, pro-apartheid individual, and lacks historic clarity. Who shot Hector Pitso?

Our south African children had to take to the streets at that time to demonstrate against the evil apartheid system and the children were right to demonstrate.
