If it's the first remaining individual word-instance each time round as this seems to say, then it would go on for 33 verses, which must drive some people mad. Is this really what's meant? Or does it mean that one of the nine distinct words is removed at each stage, first "head", then "shoulders", then "knees", then "and" and so on until at verse 9 "nose" is the last word left?

The version I grew up with started with all the words, then the second time round omitting all instances of "head", then all instances of "head" and "shoulders" and so on. Though there seemed to be no consistent rule about when, if at all, the "and"s are removed. I personally tended to leave them all in.... — Smjg (talk) 22:11, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

I think what's meant is the same as what you learned: first you skip "head", then "head, shoulders", then "head, shoulders, knees", etc. Not sure if there's a general guideline about whether to still sing the "and"'s or not.—Soap— 23:13, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

Chop

There's really no reason to include the entire pattern of the song, and frankly, it's visually confusing because at some point through you don't know where each verse is beginning or ending. There's a much quicker way to explain how to sing the song with omissions and I've made the change in these edits. If we need some kind of visual for the final silent verse, I could see that, but I don't think it's necessary. There were confusing grammatical issues with some of the prose, which I've fixed. The one thing that is not clear, is if the word "and" gets omitted or if it is sung in the final verse.
