Building History?

Anyone know anything about the origins of the building? From looking at the outside of the back of the building, it was clearly built as a theater, probably in early to mid 20th century (during the grand age of vaudeville perhaps?) But, modern remodels and additions to the front make it look like a civic center of the 1970's. To my knowledge, the renaming is not yet official. I was there last Saturday, and the signs still say "Asheville Civic Center". When the time comes, though, your proposed move will be appropriate. Evanh2008, Super Genius Who am I? You can talk to me... 21:11, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

Quoting the Asheville Citizen-Times: "According to the sponsorship deal, which became official Jan. 1" and "Jack Brundige, the corporation’s Western North Carolina sales director, originally said the signs would go up around March 1". I'm glad I didn't just go ahead and do it. Your comment on punctuation sounds fine to me. I can't comment on the bit about January 1; I was totally unaware of it having already changed, and the official website seems to be unaware as well. I commend your dedication to keeping the article updated, and I can't stop you doing anything to the article if it's properly sourced. In my opinion, though, we need to wait for some solid primary sources (a press release from the Civic Center about the renaming, and update to their website, etc.) before moving. I didn't know anyone was planning on closing the discussion. I don't see what's wrong, other than the idea that some people think the name change isn't "official" yet. There's nothing wrong with the closure, it was done (not by me) in accordance to the procedures at WP:RM, which you would have read before raising the move request. You seem not to understand the article naming policy with regard to official names. See Wikipedia:official names for an informal explanation. I referred you to both of these before. There are actually two venues called "U.S. Cellular Center." The first one is in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Asheville Civic Center recently changed its name to the "U.S. Cellular Center" as well, but the domain www.uscellularcenter.com only refers to three venues in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area, not the facility in Asheville. The situation is different there because it is a major league sports facility. There seems to be little chance of controversy.

Regarding what reliable sources call this one, this article says "U.S. Cellular Arena" so it appears things are not set after all. I'll post some of what other sources call it. I'm sure that's just an error that should be corrected.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 18:44, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

The official site for the arena, Civic Center, refers to the arena as "US Cellular Center, Asheville". I think that's a pretty official change to me. Angryapathy (talk) 21:33, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Independent, third-party sources are referring to it as the "US Cellular Center, Asheville". The Asheville Citizen-Times mentions the renaming: "In recent years, the city pushed through major renovations that included a renaming from the Asheville Civic Center to gain sponsorship money." [1] The rest of this article refers to it as "U.S. Cellular Center". To restate what I said on WP:VPP, Jack Kent Cooke Stadium => FedEx Field — Ravens Stadium and PSINet Stadium => M&T Bank Stadium. I think the article should be titled as the current name of the stadium, as decided by the stadium owner/operator, and any previous names shoud be redirects. I think that in this specific case, the logistics of the name change are a bit behind, but the name change is as "official" as WP can hope for it to be. Support move(s).
