First President to lose his seat edit

He lost his own seat in the 1983 double dissolution election, the first sitting Australian Senate President to suffer this fate.

It's true that Michael Beahan also lost his seat in 1996. However, there was a difference. Young's term came to an end immediately; actually, it had already ended when the parliament was dissolved in February 1983, so it could be argued that technically he wasn't the President in March, but only had the authority to act in the position pending the outcome of the election.

Beahan was defeated in March 1996, but his term didn't expire till 30 June. He acted in the position till August, when Margaret Reid was elected. So, yes, he was also defeated, but it didn't have immediate effect. He kept his job for a further 5 months, whereas Young was gone straight away and never had the opportunity to formally thank and farewell his colleagues in the Senate chamber, as Beahan did.

Do we need to make some remarks about these differences in the circumstances, or would that just confuse people? -- JackofOz (talk) 07:11, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
