My husband Henry George Edwards was serving on the Wild Swan and he was in the crow's nest and spotted the German planes. The planes opened fire causing the crow's nest to land on the bridge. From then on, he was on ammunition duty and consquently took his place at the guns. As Wild Swan sank, the whaler, motor-boat and a Merchant Service pattern raft (which had been recovered at sea) were launched, and were duly filled with crew members. The rest of the survivors had to make do with Carley floats which are a very basic raft, with a rope bottom which meant that the men had their feet and legs in the water all the time, and also with the waves and swell, they were constantly wet. "Wild Swan" was sunk at approximately 9.00pm, and so the survivors had to endure a very long, dark, cold night, which took its toll on them. Shipmates were lost through exposure and those surviving (my husband included) went through a very traumatic time. They were finally picked up by HMS Vansittart D64/6 at approximately 12.30 am the next day, but 31 British seamen were lost. Had it not been summertime, there would have been very few - if any - survivors.
