Diplomacy

Surely the phrase "gunboat diplomacy" originated with the fleet of Matthew Perry? Has anyone researched this? Slac speak up! 10:09, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

I think it was well established technique before then. Not sure if the term came before or after Perry. But I am very suprised that Matthew C. Perry isn't mentioned at all in this article.--ZayZayEM 04:04, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

I think its important that if anyone is going to question where the gunboat diplomacy originated, and if it was Perry who used it with Japan-you should read Perrys page to gain insight that it was not Perry who used this type of diplomacy tp enter Japan-and you would have to look beyond that era to see when and how and who first utilized this 'diplomacy'. Could be it wasnt originanted with an American at all??--BrattySoul

Not sure if it's bias, but "The term "gunboat diplomacy" has been superseded in many circles by the more euphemistic "power projection"." is an odd sentence; "Gunboat diplomacy" traditionally is the threat of force, "powere projection" means to actually use force. The example given of CLINTON'S use of the militry during the Yugo Civil Wars shows both terms, diplomacy by the E-3's and projections from Tomahawks. APEC Papua New Guinea 2018
