Cultural impact of Grindr edit
Included in this Wikipedia page should be a section discussing the cultural impact Grindr has had on the gay community as well as on pop culture. In the gay community, Grindr made finding sex as easy as just a few clicks away. Add information re: minors on Grindr edit
A recent study shows that one in four gay and bisexual boys between 13 and 17 are on the app, 69% have had sex with someone on the app, and only 25% use condoms.[1][2] — Thesciencenewsonline (talk) 22:50, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
- The above proposed material is WP:Undue and WP:COI-motivated. It should not be added. Also see WP:SCHOLARSHIP. There is no valid reason to relay this single-study material. "In popular culture" section edit
I am thinking of adding an "In popular culture" section that details all of the times Grindr has been mentioned in TV shows and movies (like Glee, Will & Grace, Family Guy, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Trainwreck, etc.). Men who have sex with men (MSM) edit
Hi Bangalamania, sorry to revert your edit but i wanted to open this discussion on inclusion of this term in the lead of the article. Usually MSM is reserved for scientific research and medical terminology. The term gay or queer can include people who do not wish to be labeled or are questioning. - The edit is one sentence saying that the app is for MSM following a sentence saying that it is for gay, etc.
- I support adding MSM to the list of users. Gay is a cultural label and MSM is a term for people who are not part of a gay culture, or do not want the label. It is mostly a medical term, but I think it applies to hookup services too. Also Bangalamania cited sources applying this term to grindr users. Maybe the full sentence is too much but why not include MSM in the list with the others? Blue Rasberry (talk) 13:27, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- There are many MSM who do not wish to be labelled as gay, bi, queer or questioning, regardless of how we define the terms. As you both say, the term is used a lot in scientific research papers and there are tonnes of such papers which mention Grindr as an app popular among MSM – they specifically do not use labels for sexual orientations, but actions. It is not the same as the terms used in the article (notably, the terms used by Grindr itself, not a third party) and warrants a mention. I'm happy with the sources being trimmed and it only being a mention rather than a whole sentence, though. –Bangalamania (talk) 13:55, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Yes I agree it is something that is not covered in the current terminology completely. I guess as it is not mentioned in the lede in a lot of other similar articles is why I wanted to discuss.
