Talk:Grid north

I understand the difference between true north and magnetic north, but I'm confused as to how true north could differ from grid lines. Longitude lines extend directly from any point on the earth to the North Pole. How could any other line be more direct? It would be great if a visual example could be provided in the article, for the benefit of readers. cheers. LordAmeth (talk) 06:33, 6 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

For example, see the reference: "...all directions at the South Pole are technically "north". For that reason we have to define another type of north, called "grid north," which points along the longitude line called the Prime Meridian. ...Other directions at the South Pole are then defined with respect to grid north and are expressed as angles of azimuth." In general, one can lay out a grid starting with any point on the earth and any direction from that point as grid north. Cstaffa (talk) 17:26, 7 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
See, for example, Ordnance Survey National Grid. In that grid, "north" is in a plane parallel with that of the base meridian, rather than toward the Pole. —Tamfang (talk) 06:36, 25 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
