Talk:Grace Dieu Abbey, Monmouth

Location

edit

My understanding of the sources is that the location shown on OS maps is the original location of the abbey, not the final location, which is unknown. Does anyone have different sources? Ghmyrtle (talk) 00:02, 11 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I read the second paragraph under "Site Description" on the Coflein page to say that the final site is the one thought to be at the grid ref given above in the entry. If you can establish that this is incorrect, feel free to reword the information accordingly; but I wish you wouldn't remove the coordinates entirely, as you did. They're still correct for one putative location of the monastery. Deor (talk) 14:26, 11 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and expand the time line on the Monastic Wales page: The entry for 1236 clearly states that the original location was probably on the west side, not the east side, of the Trothy. Deor (talk) 14:30, 11 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
My apologies - you are quite right. I've tweaked the text and reinstated the coords. Sorry! Ghmyrtle (talk) 14:34, 11 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I think I have it correctly identified, but I'm only working from maps. If I'm wrong, please remove -- or of course substitute something better! Andrew Dalby 14:25, 20 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I think that's pretty much it, though the site marked on the OS map is at least one field distant, in the direction of the view. I think the image is worth keeping - it shows nothing, but in a way that is the point. Ghmyrtle (talk) 14:31, 20 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

The parish

edit

Parc Grace Dieu is named as a civil parish on the popular edition of the OS 1" map (1919). Does anyone know when it ceased to be a parish? Andrew Dalby 14:28, 20 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

1 April 1935, apparently - http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/monmouth.html Ghmyrtle (talk) 14:33, 20 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks very much. I should look at Genuki more often. Andrew Dalby 11:42, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
