The causes

-Politicians said Gin made people lazy and more likley to criminal activity

-1 in every 8 people drank themselves to death!

-It was estimated that 1/4 of the businesses were gin houses!

-In the 1740s the people of London drank 8000,000 gallons of gin in one year!

-That means 4 gallons of gin to each adult in London

-

The Event

-English people were not allowed to distill their own gin without a license.

-Stopped people selling to unlicensed merchants

-The licenses cost £2 and it was 2 shillings for every gallon distilled.

The consequences

-There were riots in London

-The gin taxes were increased

-In 1742 the act was taken away becuase it could not be enforced

End of this prohibition

Does anyone know the act that put an end to the prohibition created by this act? If so, please add. --George The Man (talk) 00:29, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

This is incorrect the production of gin was NOT made illegal!. The three main points of the act were --

• prohibited gin distillers from selling to unlicensed merchants
• restricted retail licenses to substantial property holders, and
• charged high fees to those merchants eligible for retail licenses
