Philanthropy edit

Hello all, In this section, there is talk of a normandy hospital, does anyone have the source for this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sdcoho9 (talkcontribs) 18:21, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Sdcoho9: I haven't been able to find any evidence for such a hospital. Looking through the article history it looks like an old piece of vandalsim that nobody noticed before. I'll remove it. DuncanHill (talk) 20:48, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Background edit

The current revision [1] says "At sixteen, he was apprenticed to Joseph Rowntree, in York, to learn the grocery trade."

I wanted to wikilink Joseph Rowntree, but then the question arises as whether it was Rowntree senior, or his son: Joseph_Rowntree.

The sentence seems to have been copied from https://www.quakersintheworld.org/quakers-in-action/270/George-Cadbury which links to Rowntree junior.

However, this page: https://www.rowntreesociety.org.uk/explore-rowntree-history/rowntree-a-z/cadbury-fry-rowntree/ says "At 28 Pavement, the grocery business run by Joseph Rowntree (Senior), George Cadbury came to train in 1857. The records state that George worked specifically under Joseph Rowntree in the 1850s, and that most likely he served not as an apprentice but as an assistant."

This raises several questions. It seems to suggest that Cadbury was trained by Rowntree senior, but doesn't actually say so. Maybe father and son were both there, and Cadbury was trained by Rowntree junior. Also, in 1857 Cadbury would have been 17 or 18 (assuming the stated birth date of 1839 is correct), not 16. Finally, was Cadbury an apprentice or an assistant?

More research needed.
