I began this article to prevent possible confusion with the German-American artist Georg Schafer. Both Schafer and Schäfer have connections to art, and references to the German industrialist's art collection in English-language works often omit the two dots (umlaut) over the a. So it seemed necessary to have at least a short biography of Schäfer with a hatnote linking to his namesake. I remember relying mainly on German Wikipedia and the official website of the Museum Georg Schäfer, also in German. I'll look for some English secondary sources as time permits. I found it challenging to write about a former Nazi Party member from a NPOV, so I'm sure the effort can be improved upon.
