Controversy - 2014 accusation of racism edit

There seems to be an upheaval about whether the programme is -racist or, -unintentionally uses common panels that can be related to racist stereotypes in the general public or, -is a proper gardening discussion pointed at by self proclaimed purificators with a nonsense accusation or, -is this just a desperate attempt to get more publicity by/for one of the involved parties?

It would be nice if someone had the time and expertise to deal with this question and perhaps not just mention the controversy arised but, even solve it. 94.69.235.17 (talk) 13:05, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Just more chest-beating and righteous indignation from the Daily Hate. The academic, Ben Pitcher, responded in The Guardian here, and said: "This week, a passing reference to Gardeners' Question Time in an interview about my new book on BBC Radio 4, landed me at the centre of controversy. According to the Daily Mail, which broke the story on this supposed "race row", I accused Gardeners' Question Time of "spreading covert racist stereotypes". The story was jumped upon and repeated as perfect silly season material: some lefty academic trying to close down a venerable national institution, wasting taxpayers’ money and preventing decent British people from calling a spade a spade out of obedience to a right-on, politically correct agenda. For the record, I don’t think that GQT is racist, and the story is based on a deliberate misconstrual of what I have said and written." Per his response, and per WP:RECENTISM I don't think it belongs in the article at the moment. Keri (talk) 13:47, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the additional information! (And thank you for the welcome, though at the moment I don't feel confident enough to sign up as an editor; as a non-native I mostly confine myself to adding a short comment on the talk-pages, rather than edit with the rare exception for occasional typos, or a missing link, or sg similar. I have a dynamic IP, so it might change daily, or so, but I received the message, and appreciated it.)
