Problem with source edit
It's all relying on Wolf via tertullian.org, so it's quite an issue.
Wolf's text can be found online in at least 2 places. Cannot appreciate his qualification as an editor. Fact is that there are very obvious spelling issues, typos that can be either his own or introduced by others or by scanning the text, at least 3 even in this short passage:
- "Lot or (in tribe of) Dan" is nonsensical ("Lot or...Dan"?!), lot is not Lot, the biblical figure, but 'allotment', so I took the freedom to change to "Lot (or in tribe) of Dan". May I be forgiven.
- Gibbethon becomes Babathon
- Saul & Saoul
Also, the meaning of his abbreviations are not clear to me:
- "cp.", where I think that cf. is actually meant
- the refs to a source "K.". Probably not the Book of Kings: in Christian canon there are two, I don't know since when (LXX? Later, i.e. after Jerome?); in Jewish canon there is only one, but I cannot find it translated online. Anyway, a verse 70 is implausible. The footnotes to the introduction mention Klostermann, E. Das Onomasticon der biblischen Ortsnamen (1904), but he's not the oy cited author with K - and why should any source deserve the "honour" of a one-letter reference?
I couldn't find out if Wolf had his edition actually published, or if it was typed into a computer and posted online decades after its declared date publication of 1971, which would explain much. Could find no hard copy online, not even photographed.
Took now more time. Wolf's son digitised the work: "This text was transcribed by Noel Wolf, 2005." - transcribed doesn't mean scanned, and by judging from the intro he wrote, he is a dedicated son, but not necessarily a scholar, and maybe not the youngest either in 2005. All typos are happily excused, but where does this leave us?
From the intro it's clear that Wolf was perfectly qualified to translate, edit, annotate, update (as of 1971) site identifications and the whole lot. My questions though remain, given that all we have is a faulty transcript. Advances in the last 50+ years aren't even my main problem here.
Before I waste more time: did Wolf actually translate the On. from Greek? Whose edition? Or did he merely edit & annotate using and maybe updating existing translations? Whatever. Arminden (talk) 12:23, 28 February 2024 (UTC)

Jesus' trial was at Gabbatha, with bb. Is it KJV's fault that we have 2 ways of writing the exact same word? Or is there more to it than tradition? Arminden (talk) 13:06, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
