Överfurir edit

I have confirmed with the Swedish Army HQ regarding the rank

This rank does not exist in any branches of the army. However, the rank still remains in some volunteer organizations. It is still listed as an officer rank, yet it has been removed from the official chart that describes Swedish army ranks: ref: http://www.mil.se/article.php?id=432

Modification, notes MalinLindquist 04:06, 26 July 2006 (UTC) edit

  • Added more roles to Furir such as rilfeman and MPman
  • The introduction of Overfurir is disputed
  • The fact that furir may lead a team up to 10 is disputed. Maximum should be set to 8, including the teamleader.

Notes

Grupp translates to squad, not team. Furir translates (currently) as corporal. The article will be edited to reflect this.

A Swedish group consists of 4-8 members, while a squad up to 13 members and a fire team of 4 members. A USMC squad operates like a small platoon with 3 fire teams. A group in the Swedish cavalry, however, consists of 5 members and is more close to a fire team of the USMC with no operational or tactical similarities to a squad.

All members of a Swedish cavalry group have the rank Furir, while USMC the rank private first class or lance corporal. One of the Furir is elected a deputdy team-leader, yet still does not reach the rank of a Corporal of the USMC. Corporal of the USMC is the second in command of an entire squad, which consists of 13 soldiers.

Unfortunately, Swedish army officially translates the rank to corporal, which is a major error IMO.

Original research edit

Please remove your personal opinions on how furir ought to be translated. The offical translation (Corporal) reflects the rôles of a British infantry corporal and a Swedish infantry furir, respectively.A translation based on comparison of the American Marine Corps (which has its very own rank system) and Swedish cavalry units is quite irrelevant.

The translations you refer to are incorrect guesses and not based on any facts or references. Those should be removed ASAP! My translations however are based on facts w/o including any private opinions or original research (Se the table below). Note that holder of the rank Furir who are contracted by the Nordic Battle Group (NBG) (mechanized infantry rifle units) do not command any troops. Deputy team leaders of mechanized infantry rifle teams there instead hold a rank above Furir, namely Sergeant.

Lance Corporal, Corporal, Sergeant and Staff Sergeant of the USMC are actually very similar to their BA equivalents. Let me use BA as you suggests and you can see that in this case the translation is more than obvious.

Seniority Rank Country position (Mechanized rifle unit)
1 Corporal BA Section leadser 8 men
2 Sergeant Sweden Team leader 6 men
3 Lance Corporal BA Deputy section leader 8 men
4 Furir Sweden Rifleman, MP-man, specialist, deputy team-leader 6 men

A translation based on comparison of the American Marine Corps (which has its very own rank system) and Swedish cavalry units is quite irrelevant.

Of course, every nation such as the BA and the USMC has “its very own rank system”. For obvious reason USMC is the best benchmark for comparing Swedish military personnel due to its similarity to the objectives of NBG, scale and battle experiences. In fact it is the most widely used benchmark in use by higher military research and education in Sweden when quantifying and comparing Swedish military.

  • Removing the info box

Facts are now easy to verify by the addition of a table. That Furir corresponds better to Lance Corporal than Corporal should be clear Holders of the rank Furir as well as the Swedish Armed Forces may object to this but as they are subject to COI, I will stick with reality and with translations based on facts.

removing POV tag with no active discussion per Template:POV edit

I've removed an old neutrality tag from this page that appears to have no active discussion per the instructions at Template:POV:

This template is not meant to be a permanent resident on any article. Remove this template whenever:
  1. There is consensus on the talkpage or the NPOV Noticeboard that the issue has been resolved
  2. It is not clear what the neutrality issue is, and no satisfactory explanation has been given
  3. In the absence of any discussion, or if the discussion has become dormant.

Since there's no evidence of ongoing discussion, I'm removing the tag for now. If discussion is continuing and I've failed to see it, however, please feel free to restore the template and continue to address the issues. Sorry, I'm not sure where to type this. I'm not sure what a Furir is, but it seems to me that the dutch, german and french wikpedia-articles should be linked to "company quartermaster sergeant" rather than to "furir".Nobellius (talk) 22:09, 2 July 2017 (UTC) nobellius, july 2 2017, 2208 UTCReply
