Deletion edit

This page is notable as the software described is widely used, it was started by Daniel Robbins and is well known in the Gentoo/Sabayon/Funtoo community. I am looking for additional sources to enhance the article, and will probably post more in the next few days, however the article does not qualify for deletion without an AfD discussion. What sources do you have prove "widely used?" If this was Debian I'd take your word for it. In this case I feel compelled to ask.Sabre ball (talk) 18:43, 21 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Notable regardless of how widely used it is. ¦ Reisio (talk) 07:46, 8 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Just put a fan pov tag edit

This article is heavily biased, written possibly by a fan of funtoo. "Daniel Robbins proposed" and "the Gentoo Foundation problems": don't just cite, say a few words. What did he propose and what were the problems? "each hacker can make a difference": silly "hackers can have fun too" silly "due to the free software nature": Misleading: Gentoo is free software also "hackers free to hack on what they like": I hope that's inaccurate "Funtoo is a source based GNU/Linux distribution." Yeah, of course, since it's a Gentoo offspring! Doh... "the Funtoo project leader will announce in advance the users": do you guarantee that? "Funtoo has several critical changes, or major software packages which are unique to it.": This has not been shown, even worse, not explained "This method has been described as superior to Gentoo's current system of utilizing rsync": you may NOT cite from primary source "create complex network interfaces based on pre-created profiles": explain? "xz" and "boot-update": that's hardly notable difference. Do you expect people migrate from Gentoo because of the compression method? "it should be possible": that's not encyclopedic "at some point in the future": are you kidding me???

This article is so badly written that I don't think I'll put the effort to insert tags for correction. It needs a major rewrite.

PS: About deletion: GOD NO! Though it certainly NOT widely used (even Gentoo isn't), if the Gentoo architect created a distro, even from a technical point of view it is interesting to know about, even to just see how Gentoo could be improved. Hell, wikipedia has an article of "The Road Ahead" of the maker of edlin editor and BASIC interpreter, we'll save a few kBs for a linux distro? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Galanom (talkcontribs) 16:27, 15 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I didn't read more than a few words of that, but it should be a lot better now. ¦ Reisio (talk) 07:47, 8 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Rewrite of the article edit

Since the article is 4 years old, it really needs a lot of updating. All the points above still hold: the article is in really bad shape and tagging specific issues really won't help here. The main process I will try to follow is:

a)Updating the major information discrepancies that 4 years of inaction have created.
b)Finding other credible sources. I consider the Funtoo Home page (www.funtoo.org) authoritative for the technical specifications of the distribution, but not in any way for the following:
1. benchmarking, stability, or ease of use
2. community responsiveness
3. definitions of "free software"
4. comparisons to other distributions
5. Gentoo vs. Funtoo on the benefits of using either (on the ideological level)
Also, I will aim to include coverage of Funtoo in other languages when it is relevant.
c)resolving the General Notability Guideline issue
d)resolving other issues the article faces with Wikipedia guidelines - the steps a-c should resolve most of the issues the article is facing at the moment.
e)if after the edits I create you think the webpage is biased or does not follow the guidelines, please flag the webpage accordingly, and let me know of any issues.

I will update the this rewrite section of the page to update the status of my attempts to fix the article. I might create another section if the need arises. ¦ Brhenc (talk) 13:13, 17 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

More Features edit

1. No Systemd - Funtoo use openrc by default, systemd works as well but isn't supported. Even so, you can install kde or gnome without any systemd at all (as kde and gnome have support of systemd in the core).
2. Extended profiles - Funtoo have way more extended profiles than gentoo, and you can tailor your experience way more advanced (divided by flavors, mix-ins, and types). The tools used (ego, epro) gives a way better and more advanced approach than eselect, that is marked to be removed as well. ¦ Menelkir (talk) 15:31, 17 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
