I started this page based on a description of fugitive emissions in a Discussion Paper for a Natural Gas Transmission and Distribution Greenhouse Gas Reporting Protocol produced by the California Climate Action Registry. Also my knowledge and experience in the subject.

The article needs expanding to cover:

fugitive emission detection technologies (there are some interesting new technologies under development)
the methods for estimating fugutive emissions from facilities (usually emission factors)
some data on studies that have estimated fugitive emissions
a summary of climate policies in different countries and how/whether they include or address fugitive emissions

I sent this article to Allan Chambers, P.Eng. of the Alberta Research Council for review and he said it was a good summary and made a few additions, corrections. We still need a reference for the infrared gas detection cameras though (see http://www.goinfrared.com/cameras/camera/gasfindir/), and there is no discussion of policy and regulation that targets fugitive emissions.

Not sure who add "such as the Photovac MicroFID". Sounds like a plug for a specific brand/product[1]. Not sure if this is appropriate.

I believe the original term "Fugitive Emissions Study" was coined by Engineers working in the Oil and Gas Industry and pertained specifically to hydrocarbon gases such as methane. These studies assessed the risk of an explosion and/or fire as the result of air/fuel mixtures that could easily be ignited by sparks or heat, i.e., methane. Other similar processes would include Hydrogen gas processes etc. Most of those who apply API RP 500/505 in their fugitive emissions studies will not know what is being talked about from the Envirnonmental FES perspective.
