DISPUTING STATEMENT ABOUT TIMING OF THE CHANGE FROM FARMLAND TO RESIDENTIAL

It seems to me that the cited source must be either (i) wrong or (ii) misquoted when it says this change started in the 1960s. Having lived there in the 1960s I am certain that the change from farmland to residential occurred long before the 1960s. Most of what is residential land in the suburb today was already residential at that time. In support of my comment, I also note that the article mentions that the primary school was founded in 1916.

DISPUTING STATEMENT ABOUT BUS SERVICES

While some Sydney Buses bus services only serviced the periphery, an exception to this was the 154 route (which I travelled on many times in the 1960s and 1970s). I am fairly sure it terminated on Forest Way near the shopping centre (though I never actually travelled all the way to where it terminated). It certainly did not stop at the periphery. This bus route has apparently been discontinued. The Sydney Buses website only has information on existing services, not historical ones. So I do not have a source to cite and thus have left the article unchanged (at least I did change it, but then undid my change when I understood better the importance of cited sources).

INADEQUATE CITATIONS

I've added a few cleanup tags as the "Aboriginal", "Geography" and "Roads" sections don't have any citations. Doing a couple of Google searches didn't help find where this information came from. If anyone has sources for this, please add references. Carmazina (talk) 08:49, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

DISCUSSION COMMENT 27 JULY 2008 I would like to place a question mark over the assertion that Frenchs Forest became residential "from the 1960s". From my recollections as a resident in the mid-1960s many of the houses around where I lived gave every appearance of having been there for quite a few years, and I am sure the transition from farmland to residential began LONG before the 1960s. Certainly there was still residential construction occurring in parts of the suburb at that time, but it was in its final stages. As the "1960s" assertion is from a published source, I cannot really edit it out based on my personal recollection. But I would like to highlight it as questionable. French's Forest

The current article on French's Forest states that a John French, a police constable, acquired land in the area. The reference is to the Geographical Names Registrar. I found that the this body states that French's Forest is named after James French, a police constable. The name James is correct. The Wikipedia does not actually state that the suburb is named after "John" French but the implication is there. Even with the correct first name, James, the article would be misleading by stating only that French was a police constable. James Harris French was indeed sworn as a Special Constable and Ranger of Crown Lands in 1851, but that is not his significance to the area that is named after him. In 1856 he acquired 41 acres in an area around the Bantry Bay Road area and later more land previously owned by Pearce, and developed a timber industry with 2 sawmills. Bullocks were used to drag the timber down to Bantry Bay Road for shipping. The area was indeeed French's Forest. More information can be found at, among others, the State Library of NSW, NSW National Parks, and especially the book "Forest History" by Shelagh and George Champion, published in 1988.

It is unfortunate that the wrong information on Wikipedia has been taken up by others including several real estate agents who are giving new residents wrong information about their suburb.

I am new to writing anything re Wikipedia and ignorant about how this may be fixed. I'm hoping that this is the start of a successful little campaign to right a wrong for good old James French!

It looks like you have some very interesting and relevant information very suitable for inclusion on the page, so the thing to do is grasp the nettle and start editing, just as long as you cite your sources. Second paragraph of Aboriginal culture?

How accurate is this? The bit about Suzanne Collins is obviously a first class act of vandalism. But is there any truth to the fact about the Indigenous people’s ritual to ward off evil spirits by doing a ‘Hunger Games’ ritual? Pen licker (talk) 06:45, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

Pretty sure this is racist bullshit. I've read the Val Attenbrow book referenced, and I just did a Google text search in it for "Frenchs Forest" and "blue tongue". Zero results. Mizchalmers (talk) 06:10, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
