I placed the conflict of interest tag on this page because of the connection between the inital editor, User:Freedomcrossing and the subject of the article. ThemFromSpace 18:39, 24 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

There's no conflict. User is a volunteer for the non-profit organization that sponsored the monument. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Freedomcrossing (talkcontribs) 18:53, 24 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Working for the organization is usually considered a close relationship which inhibits neutral point of view. The fact that a volunteer created the article is all the more worrying because there will always be the question of whether someone not affiliated with the group would have identified it as being notable enough for inclusion. The fact that the organization is non-profit is irrelevant, as nonprofit organizations can and do use Wikipedia for promotional purposes. ThemFromSpace 18:56, 24 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

In response: 1) There has been full disclosure that the creator is intimately familiar with the monument. We hope that Wikipedia endorses "honesty is the best policy," versus encouraging page creators to make up non-descript user names that would prevent triggering conflict alerts. 2) The subject is notable because it is the first large scale monument for the Underground Railroad in Western New York, one of the main routes to freedom for fugitive slaves. 3) The article does not promote the organization responsible for the monument, but rather, provides information on the monument itself for Wikipedia readers who may want more background information. 4) Even if someone were to assume the article "promotes" something, the monument site is free to the public, and no one has anything to gain. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.78.202.79 (talk) 17:54, 26 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
