Official name of group

edit

There is no definite article in the official name for the Four Tops, as confirmed by record labels and Joel Whitburn's chart books. The definite article is used before their name in speech and in running text, but not in headings and in lists of names. The same is true for:

  • Carpenters
  • Buggles
  • Bee Gees
  • Go-Gos

I can't figure out how to remove the definite article from the titles of the entries of these acts.

For the record, the following non-definite-article acts are already listed correctly in Wikipedia:

  • Pet Shop Boys
  • Buzzcocks
  • Spice Girls
  • Village People
  • Sex Pistols
  • Doves
  • Associates

A nerdy observation, but keeping in the spirit of Wikipedia for sure. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DavidOPerson (talkcontribs) 08:17, 14 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Regarding the Happy's Pizza section... I don't know that I would classify Happy's as a "pizza giant". At present they have about 15 stores, almost all of them in Detroit. It's a strong presence in the city, to be sure, but not nearly enough to qualify the company as a "giant". Also, referring to their endorsement as "selling out" is hardly NPOV. It's true that on most of their records they are billed as "Four Tops" rather than "The Four Tops" - but not all of them. And although I agree with the observation, I think common sense, and common usage lends towards "The". After all, who would really say, "My favourite Motown groups are The Temptations, The Supremes and Four Tops"? It's just not right somehow. MegdalePlace 22:29, 19 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I'm late to this discussion, but I think the definitive answer is the article should be "The Four Tops". The reason is that a US Trademark search shows that "The Four Tops" is a registered trademark, but "Four Tops" is not. The fact that "most" albums show "Four Tops" is not definitive as some are also "The Four Tops". A search at classic.mowtown.com shows both usages. A trademark search for "The Four Tops" results in serial number 77746289, but a search for exactly "Four Tops" shows no trademarks. To verify these searches pick here, select "Word and/or Design Mark Search (Free Form)", then for "Search Term" enter "(live)[LD] AND (the-four-tops)[FM]" or "(live)[LD] AND (four-tops)[FM]". info box- order of lineups listed

edit

Greetings,

I have been mulling over switching the info box to reflect the best known version of the band, i.e. the information that almost any user is going to be looking for when they arrive at the page. Maybe having a listing of "members" and then "current lineup" below. It just seems strange and like a strange piece of misinformation to have the "people who currently tour and legally own the name Four Tops" to take precedence over "people who recorded as Four Tops and are performing on the records you own." I mean, is the purpose of the info box to supply quick and easy information about the band and its recordings, or is it an advertisement for the current lineup?

I am posting a similar message to this on several other band wikis in similar shape, in the hopes of getting some type of forward momentum or consensus on the problem. Seanmercy (talk) 00:53, 15 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
