The phrase in paragraph 3 that reads "...was opposite American Fort Meigs" does not imply it was directly opposite. Fort Miami is 3,080 yards (2816 m) downstream from Fort Meigs.

How can you say that Fort Miami was built in territory that was CLAIMED by the United States? That territory belonged to the United States by terms of the Treaty of Paris, ending the Revolutionary War, to which the British agreed. The British presence in the forts south of the Great Lakes, such as at Fort Detroit, was in contravention of the treaty.
