Fort Banks Edit

Hi again Jim! I have made this page: User:Pgrig/Fort Banks to try (with your help) to tidy up the page on Fort Banks (Mortar Battery) a bit and clear up a couple of issues. Perhaps you could watch that page and answer this missive on its Talk page.

Specifically, Fort Banks had two mortar batteries: Bty Kellogg and Bty Lincoln. Each Bty ended up with 6 12-inch mortars, 4 in a Pit A and 2 in a Pit B (two Pit B mortars were dismounted from each B pit). I believe the pit just W of Kennedy Rd. is Pit B of Bty Kellogg, and I assume you were looking westerly down into this pit when you took your photo of the entry to its magazine. I visited the site a couple of years back, but was only hunting for benchmark disks, so didn't get many photos.

So I wonder what part of the site is in fact referenced by the NRHP listing. That listing should either name the fort (most of which has now been bulldozed away and built over with condos) or one of te batteries. As best I can see, the fort only had one other gun, a single 3-inch AA gun. I have a 1938 map of the fort which I will process and post (on Commons, of course!) soon.

An on-site sign from the Winthrop Historical Commission says there were 16 mortars in 4 pits, of which Pit B remains. If you either e-mail me through the facility on my user pages or enable e-mail in your "My Preferences", I'll send you photos of the two plaques on site -- I can't upload them because that would be a copyvio.

The NRHP listing names are often a bit off -- this probably refers to the whole thing, even though only one pit is left. . . Jim - Jameslwoodward (talk • contribs) 18:50, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Proposed merge with Fort Banks (Massachusetts)

In line with the way other fort articles have developed, I'm proposing that this article be merged into Fort Banks (Massachusetts), especially as the fort had only this one battery originally (split into two later). Comments are welcome. RobDuch (talk) 01:58, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
