Re: a page on George Williams himself. FontForge is a significant work of real relevance in contemporary technological history. It seems reasonable to expect a significant, persistent legacy from his coding work. It can also be inferred that his typografical work will be permanently relevant, (from the significant effort which he has invested in Fontforge as a tool for his own use). Therefore George Williams is, (or likely will be) a biographically relevant individual. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.134.31.249 (talk) 19:32, 27 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Good luck getting an article on an open source programmer past WP:BIO.--Oneiros (talk) 23:14, 27 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I once wrote to a colleague: "FontForge is simply a joy to use. Everything works just as you expect it to. The program's model is intuitive. The help is excellent. And it costs -- nothing. When using FontForge, one has the sense that a single mind finely crafted the design before finely crafting the implementation, And it looks beautiful. George Williams is my hero. He deserves some kind of award for FontForge." D.keenan (talk) 02:22, 7 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

D.keenan - but did you ever use this program ? The interface is worse than awful, the workflow clunky, it's really not a great program. It would be right at home in DOS 3.3 It's just that there isn't much competition and none for the price. It works okay but this fawning over a rather poor program, jeeze 203.160.71.198 (talk) 05:55, 22 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

How in Blazes... edit

Can someone update the page to give suggestions on HOW TO INSTALL this silly thing? I got the download but I can't figure out what any of the files do - windows wants to open them all with media center! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.92.84.146 (talk) 22:49, 3 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

I haven't run it under Windows, but I understand that you have to install Cygwin first. Step-by-step How-to information isn't really suitable for Wikipedia itself (though it could be on some related projects, such as Wikibooks etc.). AnonMoos (talk) 23:39, 3 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
This might help: FontForge install procedures for cygwin under MS Windows ARK (talk) 23:59, 3 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
In Ubuntu Linux, type these commands in the temrinal:
sudo apt-get install software-properties-common;
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fontforge/fontforge;
sudo apt-get update;
sudo apt-get install fontforge
On macOS, first install homebrew, then type:
brew install fontforge
in the terminal.
I don't know about Windows, most Windows programs come in simple binaries that are easy to install, but you can make a virtual Ubuntu machine using Virtualbox and install it there. Tcarisland (talk) 02:18, 11 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

This is no longer an issue. FontForge has since been ported to Windows, and can now be installed as simply as any other Windows application. Cygwin is no longer required. D.keenan (talk) 02:27, 7 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

First release date edit

If the change from "PfaEdit" to "Fontforge" was basically just a cosmetic name change, and PfaEdit was first released in 2001, shouldn't the first release date be in 2001? AnonMoos (talk) 23:26, 15 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
