Talk:Floating sheerleg

Sheerlegs refers to the lifting part (crane) of the heavy lifting vessels shown.

While it is true that sheerlegs are nowadays much more common on the floating heavy lifting barges and cranes mentioned in the article they were, in the past, commonly used on fixed and portable land based applications:

Examples can be seen on the following pages:

  1. ) Photos in the middle of this page show sheerlegs in use in the 1940s, in Newhaven, East Sussex, UK.
  2. ) Sheelegs in use in Malta
  3. ) Portable sheerlegs, here

Definition of the term 'Sheerlegs' - Oxford dictionary.
"sheerlegs
plural noun
[treated as singular]
a hoisting apparatus made from poles joined at or near the top and separated at the bottom, used for masting ships, installing engines, and hauling heavy objects."

I agree. The sheerlegs and pontoon taken together are referred to as "Floating Sheerlegs". The name of the article should be changed. Everybody got to be somewhere! (talk) 20:30, 9 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
