NWR and Wilderness boundaries? edit
NWS thinks Tatoosh Island is in the NWR: [1]
And says "All islands, except Destruction Island, are included in Washington Islands Wilderness." [2]
Both conflict with our articles. I'm guessing we're right, but... --Pete Tillman (talk) 03:40, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
- From reading, I think Tatoosh Island is outside the NWRs. It is apparently a part of the Makah Indian Reservation, and owned by the tribe. I don't see anything in your links which claims Tatoosh Island is part of the NWR... it appears to be north of Flattery Point and outside the bounds of the reserve. - Ah, it's actually here --"Tatoosh Island -Flattery Rocks National Wildlife Refuge". Probably just sloppy work by the FWS volunteer, is my guess. It's been around 40 years since I was near Cape Flattery, so I'm a little behind the times.... <G> -- Pete Tillman (talk) 06:30, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
- Interesting... but yeah, I think that is a mistake. The map on the page (which came from an FWS site) explicitly does not include it, and the original map (File:Flattery Rocks Reservation EO 703 illustration.jpg) also explicitly does not include it (the island is marked on both maps as being outside the reserve). To make things more confusing, I think the island is part of the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary (or at least the waters around it), but not part of the Washington Islands Wilderness nor the Olympic National Park (I guess those stop at the Makah reservation).
