Depth charges?

What's the function of a submarine carrying depth charges itself, as described (unsourced) here?

No, it is not a mistranslation. Finns lacked warships of all calibers. So the idea was to use the subs running on their electric engines as subhunters at night when the Soviet subs had to recharge their batteries using noisy diesel engines. In 'Suomen Laivasto 1918–1968 II' [Finnish Navy 1918–1968, part II] there is a description of the equipping of the submarines with 4 depth charges. And there was on p. 119 even an image of it. Also in the official Finnish Wartime Photograph Archive (online resource) there is among undated images a image #122019 which shows a Finnish sub on surface apparently in December 1942 with 4 depth charges on the rear deck. Thanks. " The boat moved at 10 knots and the depth charge exploded at 45 m depth." - so how does that work then? I don't know the sink rate of these depth charges or how far the Finnish boat could get clear in that time, but it must have been a close thing. Depth charge sink rates varied a lot and Finns had depth charges with low rate of descent. Kinda had to. Finnish gunboats which were also used as sub hunters could barely make 15 knots so sub going at 10 knots was quite enough. And they weren't intended to be used on targets on surface. Subs had the 76mm gun and torpedoes for that. They were meant for subs that had submerged - i.e. done a crash dive to avoid the attack. - Wanderer602 (talk) 15:29, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
