27 September edit

Anybody have a quote for the capture on the 27 September, newspaper reports seem to indicate it was earlier on the 17th. MilborneOne (talk) 22:36, 19 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Proposed move edit

Any objections to moving the article to "Fighting for Mouquet Farm" as per page 12?Keith-264 (talk) 08:56, 14 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

G'day, Keith, interesting question. Is it just that work that uses that term, or do other works use it as well? What is the term favoured by the majority of the sources? Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 07:45, 16 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
OH 1916 II follows James who based his work on The Official Names of the Battles and Other Engagements Fought by the Military Forces of the British Empire during the Great War, 1914–1919 and the Third Afghan War, 1919: Report of the Battles Nomenclature Committee as approved by the Army Council (1921) which classified, named and dated military engagements, James added the OOB so the names are those in the report. I haven't checked other sources yet but I'll keep a look out.Keith-264 (talk) 08:41, 16 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Flicking through the articles in the campaignbox in the "other engagements" section, some follow the committee nomenclature and some don't: Battle of Fromelles is Attack at Fromelles (on the Aubers Ridge), High Wood is Attacks on High Wood, Butte de Warlencourt is Attacks on the Butte de Warlencourt, Schwaben Redoubt is Capture of Schwaben Redoubt and Regina Trench is Capture of Regina Trench. Capture of Fricourt, Capture of Trônes Wood and the red linked pages are the same.Keith-264 (talk) 08:54, 16 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Dates edit

The whole article, but especially the lede and infobox, present conflicting information with regards to the battle's dates and territorial domain, seemingly confusing other battles with this one. For example, the lede states the battle was part of Pozieres (23 July – 3 September), and later Thiepval Ridge (26–28 September), during which the Germans were finally pushed back. The infobox apparently summarises these three battles into one, stating an Allied victory and the conjunct 10 August – 26 September 1916 dates. It seems to me this is a prime candidate for either merging or significant copy edits to properly separate the content as a battle in its own right. Mouquet Farm is a Tactical Incident and the fighting there took place during Pozieres, dated 23 July - 3 September and 16 September and 26 September (James, Battle and Engagements 1924/1990 p. 12). The Nomenclature Committee named twelve battles and 23 Tactical Incidents. Since the fighting was continuous, the periodisation is somewhat arbitrary but everyone follows it (even the French from what I can glean). Several editors have written the article but it hasn't yet been rewritten like all of the rest. I'm working on Beaumont Hamel and intend to get round to this last, once Longueval is done. If you look through the other articles, you'll see what I mean. Regards Keith-264 (talk) 16:09, 22 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
