Talk:Farm cat

Latest comment: 4 months ago by EditorInTheRye in topic Can we add a 'controversy' section?

This article is useful as a portrayal of the 'working cat' in agriculture. There are a whole series of articles about Working Dogs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Working_dogs - such as sheep dogs and guard dogs. Why not let people know cats can be useful to humans too?

  • I agree that an article portraying the "usefulness" and industrialness of cats is a good idea. I'm wondering if it might be a good idea to include such a topic on the Cat page. Kpstewart (talk) 02:15, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Gypsydoctor (talk) 21:11, 3 June 2020 (UTC) A related category of cats would be street cats, which are similar to Farm Cats but live in the streets in cities with warm climates. Examples are Istanbul, Turkey and San Juan, Puerto Rico. These cats are often friendly and are fed by the citizens, but are not "owned" by anyone.Reply

Can we add a 'controversy' section? edit

Recent research has shown that cats aren't very effective pest control, especially wrt rats. Farm or barn cats are also contributing to wildlife predation and are not commonly used in places like Australia due to this. Additionally there are ethical concerns about the practice of keeping barn cats in much of the same vein as the criticisms of outdoor cats. This entry appears to only present the pro-barn cat POV when it's currently a hotly debated topic. Minty420 (talk) 08:27, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Have you got any sources that cover this? It's probably the best place to start if you wanted such a section EditorInTheRye (talk) 19:09, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
