F.A.N.G.F.A.N.G. (Street Fighter) – Totally ambiguous name currently, requires disambiguation ZXCVBNM (TALK) 22:47, 28 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 15:21, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • @Zxcvbnm and Ahecht: queried move request Anthony Appleyard (talk) 15:23, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • What other notable entity uses the acronym F.A.N.G.? If there isn't one (which I'm assuming since F.A.N.G. (disambiguation) doesn't exist), then adding (Street Fighter) would be unnecessary disabiguation. --Ahecht (TALK

  • EDIT: I did notice that there is a redirect at F.A.N.G. (G.I. Joe), but since the term is only mentioned once in a list with no explanation, the character that has an entire article devoted to them is clearly the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. See also Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/F.A.N.G., where it was determined that the GI Joe vehicle was non-notable. --Ahecht (TALK

  • @Zxcvbnm and Ahecht: And see Fang (disambiguation) for more acronym uses. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 11:25, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
There are a grand total of two other acronyms on that page: one that doesn't use periods, and one that is non-notable. --Ahecht (TALK

  • I am opposed to the move request. I did my research before starting the article in the first place and came to the same conclusion as Ahecht, that the current name is correct per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC since the G.I. Joe vehicle is not at all notable. Haleth (talk) 16:33, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Strong support F.A.N.G. (Street Fighter)... why? Well search "acronym FANG" in GNews and Gbooks and anyone will immediately see why.... In ictu oculi (talk) 20:47, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
    • The Google search engine is not case sensitive and does not seem to recognize periods in between the acronym letters, so that is really a technical limitation as opposed to what you have implied here. Search results and article names on Wikipedia are case sensitive though. Haleth (talk) 16:50, 30 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
No but I strongly support the move for the same reason as Zxcvbnm has proposed it - to any person outside the world of (Street Fighter) the acronym F.A.N.G. would mean what it means in the real world. In ictu oculi (talk) 21:30, 30 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
I would say your position is based on editorial bias and original research with regards to the supposed opinions of the average, reasonable person. The nominator's proposal is based on the rationale that the name is too vague, not because of any issues with the subject topic's notability or relevance to the real world as you have insinuated. The way it is spelled marks the topic as distinct and unusual on Wikipedia compared to other similarly-spelled acronyms; the acronym is separated by periods, and will only turn up on the Wikipedia search bar if it is correctly typed as it is case sensitive. The only other topic that is spelled and formatted in the same way is a relatively obscure toy from GI Joe. The fact that Google searches are unable to distinguish periods between the letters does not support your point at all. Haleth (talk) 15:27, 9 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per nom. This is an irreparably ambiguous construction. BD2412 T 05:09, 20 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

F.A.N.G. (Street Fighter)F.A.N.G – This character's name does not have a period after the G. This is consistent across all official sources, including the Street Fighter games, and all Capcom websites. Note: When this discussion began, this article was located at F.A.N.G. because of an undiscussed move, which has now been reverted as requested below and at WP:RM/TR. The proposal was previously F.A.N.G.F.A.N.G SilverLocust 💬 13:07, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose The page should be moved back to F.A.N.G. (Street Fighter) where it was moved by consensus above. The page was restored to the original location out of process and against longstanding consensus. I also oppose removing the period after the "G" as many sources continue to use the period (this being just one example). ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 08:21, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support Regardless of what other outlets use, I think it's enough of a distinction to be fine here and avoids the need for a disambig on the article name. Looking into things closely Goatrope's assessment is correct: the G lacks a period in all instances they use it. And it seems to be very much a purposeful choice.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 09:07, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Undo undiscussed move and restore the consensus title of F.A.N.G. (Street Fighter), per the previous RM. 162 etc. (talk) 22:15, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Weak revert undiscussed move to convert to ordinary English punctuation styling per MOS:TM. — BarrelProof (talk) 01:30, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment Attempted to move it myself to F.A.N.G. (Street Fighter) so discussion could continue and I accidentally made things worse: now the talk page is at the intended target, but the main page cannot be moved. Apologies.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 01:47, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
I submitted a revert request to WP:RMTR. The reason you couldn't move it yourself is that the redirect was edited after the move in the other direction. — BarrelProof (talk) 03:42, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

F.A.N.G. (Street Fighter)F.A.N.G (Street Fighter) – Resubmitting this as the last attempt received a Procedural Close. As stated before, this character's name does not have a period after the G. Every official source (official website[1], official YouTube [2], and the Street Fighter 5 game itself) spells this name without a final period. There are many unofficial, third party sources that make the mistake of adding the last period, but there are zero official sources that do so. Goatrope (talk) 19:11, 2 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

  • Preliminary oppose. What matters are the secondary sources, not the primary ones, and no evidence of secondary use has been provided. O.N.R. (talk) 20:18, 2 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support In contrary to the above statement, if secondary sources are getting something like that wrong, it's still wrong. This is a bit different than if, say, the argument is "should we include a full name or not?" Additionally an examination of google searches shows that F.A.N.G is used by some sources such as Redbull in an article regarding the character.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 20:33, 2 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Weak oppose per MOS:TM and WP:OFFICIALNAME. Independent reliable sources and ordinary English formatting outweigh "official" stylings. — BarrelProof (talk) 05:51, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose Per the same reasoning as I gave above. It's not the common name. (Also, I am really unsure why the above was a "procedural close" and no consensus. A vote for an alternate move means people do not support the currently proposed move, the consensus was pretty clear with 3 in opposition). ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 16:13, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • @Zxcvbnm: something that did cross my mind, but the use with the period on the end in media outlets could be due to wikipedia's own use in that regard too. It'd be difficult to prove, but not unheard of (we do see articles discussing characters often using the Wikipedia image even if the art is more obscure, after all)--Kung Fu Man (talk) 16:16, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
