Page title and redirects edit

This article was first created at the title Equitable Tourism Options (EQUATIONS). (Actually, it was incubated in the userspace first but that's not relevant now.) About a week after promotion to the mainspace, the page was moved to Equitable Tourism Options without comment and the automatically-generated redirect tagged for speedy-deletion. Speedy-deletion of the redirect was declined with the comment The history prior to the pagemove makes this title ineligible under the "recently created" clause of CSD#R3. The corporate alias in parenthesis is also arguably not "implausible".

The original creator of the article then left the following comment in a userpage request:

The name in parenthesis is important to the title as the non-profit organization in concern is recognized and referred to by both names, the complete name and their acronym in parenthesis. More importantly, the organization is also legally registered by the name Equitable Tourism Options (EQUATIONS) (including the name in parenthesis) under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act 1960[1]. Could you please help revert the Title of the article to Equitable Tourism Options (EQUATIONS)?

My thoughts in reply:

  • Per the Manual of Style page on Article titles, acronyms are usually spelled out in the lead paragraph of article content, not in the page title. They may also exist as redirects, though, and that generally satisfies the search-engine need.
  • The legal registration of the entity with the acronym makes this case a little more tricky but in general we are told to use the common name, not necessarily the "official" name unless there is ambiguity. In this case, I don't know of any other entity with a name similar to "Equitable Tourism Options" so I'm not sure the ambiguity clause applies. A google search on the exact phrase "Equitable Tourism Options" returns slightly more results than the google search on the exact phrase "Equitable Tourism Options (EQUATIONS)". All appear to be relevant hits and the difference is not great.

My conclusions so far: The redirect still exists so readers will be able to find the page at either title regardless. I can not tell from the available evidence which is truly the "common name" as defined in the Wikipedia policy. Rossami (talk) 14:09, 25 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
