Untitled edit

Removed all Endicott self-promotional material from the page.

This page looks like it was copied from a brochure or from Endicott College's website. Furthermore, it does not read like an encyclopedic entry and is not NPOV. I think it should be removed or rewritten.

I agree with you, and I'm going to try and rewrite it. A lot of the text is from the college website, but as the user who added it owns the copyright [1] it is not a violation. Hut 8.5 17:44, 27 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I added an advert tag and a cleanup tag. Please don't delete them until the article is rewritten or the matter discussed here. The fact that someone who is employed by the school wrote most of this article is all the more reason to rewrite it; it needs a neutral tone and point of view regardless of the accuracy of the information. Wikipedia is not a website for advertisements. Thank you! -Fearfulsymmetry 21:37, 18 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Revamping the page edit

Hello WP. I am a faculty member at Endicott College, and my students will be working on this page for a class project this semester. Each student will be going through the Wikipedia Education Program training and will be following WP best practices. Please feel free to discuss and challenge any revisions made to the page (but please bear with the fact that most students are new contributors to WP). Any comments and feedback are welcome. Before editing, we are doing extensive research on what goes into a great WP page about a college (including discussion of Featured articles like Dartmouth_College.

Thanks. UOJComm (talk) 17:21, 8 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Dividing up work edit

I have assigned a certain number of students for each task / section of our project (the number in parentheses). Please sign up for one of these by signing your name under the category. Do not exceed the number of students. For example, if 5 students have already signed up for Infobox, please choose a different task.

Be sure to skip a space before and after your signature (i.e. before and after your 4 "~"). Maintain a clean format with each username on a new line.

List of dorms Comment edit

The article mainly consists of a poorly referenced list of dorms and their attributes, hardly encyclopedic content. Hopefully the students will be able to improve this and add reliable third party references to all content. Theroadislong (talk) 19:26, 28 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello Theroadislong. Yes, we will be improving this article and following WP best practices including NPOV and verifiabiliy. Students have gone through the WEP training, and we will be drafting and checking before publishing. But please continue to comment/work on this article and let us know what you think of the work we do. Thanks... UOJComm (talk) 14:34, 29 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
A little concerned to see that your "educational assignment" is titled "Intro to Social Media"
Our intention here is to create an encyclopedia, any type of "social" activity comes only as a result of collaboration on articles. Wikipedia is certainly NOT social media! Theroadislong (talk) 19:59, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
That is a thought I will also confess to having had. Some of the ways of Wikipedia might transfer well to social media, such as WP:AGF and WP:CIVIL. That said, an encyclopedic style of writing is very different from a hashtagged tweet, a text message with smileys, or a facebook entry. For one thing, the audience cannot be assumed to be familiar with colloquial US English idioms. See WP:ENGVAR. Writing for Wikipedia is more like technical or expository writing, with clarity valued more highly than flowery loquacious style.
OK, I will now stop pontificating, and go back to being mostly a wikignome, fixing little things here and there. As you all dip your toes into the wiki-water, know that there are others here to help, and let that bring a feeling of being welcomed. __Just plain Bill (talk) 23:05, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hello Theroadislong and Just plain Bill. Thank you for the comments and concerns. Our project is not "Intro to Social Media," but that is the name of the class these students are in. We will be engaging with Wikipedia as an encyclopedia, not a social network with hashtags and smileys!. Students have gone through the WEP Student Training, learning the principles of WP, and a unit of our class is on wikis, the history of wikis, the history of Wikipedia, and my own dissertation research on Wikipedia. Our goal is to improve this article, which needs improving, and we are doing it in a slow, thoughtful, organized, and researched way. We look forward to working with anyone in the WP community who would also like to improve this article. In the end, I just want to assure you that just because the class is titled "Intro to Social Media," students are not treating this as Twitter, Facebook, etc. We have registered a course page and will be using the Talk page there to discuss content (and the presentation of that content) that we'd like to see in the article, and I welcome you to follow us there.
Please let me know if you have other questions or concerns, and thank you for your attention. UOJComm (talk) 00:49, 3 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
The article is bloated with poorly referenced promotional puffery, it doesn't appear to be improving but getting worse, it needs a LOT of hacking back. In line external links are not required either. Theroadislong (talk) 20:01, 21 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
As you know, this is a learning process for new WP editors. Your criticisms are valid and will be resolved. I hope you can bear with the article while we work on it. UOJComm (talk) 20:11, 21 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
OK but I think you and your students need to stop adding more content and address the concerns in the maintenance templates, the article reads like an advert for the school, it relies almost solely on primary sources or indeed no sources at all, it uses inappropriate external links in the body of the article and more importantly uses content copied and pasted from here [2] Copyrighted material can and should be deleted imediately.Theroadislong (talk) 20:28, 21 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
We are not adding any more material and will correct these issues. UOJComm (talk) 22:21, 21 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hello again Theroadislong. So it looks like the Unigo site is some sort of mirror of the actual WP page (I'm learning what "Wikipedia mirror" means. At the bottom of the site, it says "Description above from the Wikipedia article Endicott College licensed under CC-BY-SA, full list of contributors here Community Pages are not affiliated with, or endorsed by, anyone associated with the topic." But what's interesting is there is a "Student Life" section on the Unigo site. I added that new section to the Endicott WP article myself last week. I do not believe (at this point) that my students copied from this page, but rather that this page is displaying the Endicott WP page. Can you confirm? Or is this what you think? If so, is the copyright warning template still warranted at the top of the Endicott article? I certainly agree with your other criticisms of the article and the warning templates at the top, but those are things we are currently working on. If you think there is still copyright issues, I will revert the article back to November 12, before my students added content. When you can, please advise. Thank you. Copyright problems edit

The campus section has been copied and pasted from https://www.unigo.com/colleges/endicott-college/summary it needs to be removed and re-written. 20:45, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

It seems this might be a mirror? Theroadislong (talk) 20:49, 21 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
These copyright issues will be fixed. I am on my mobile now but will resolve this when at my computer. Your particular suggestions are helpful...anything specific is very helpful. I am unfamiliar with the Wikipedia mirror concept, but will investigate that more. Could you elaborate on that issue? We are working in good faith to improve this article. Copyright problems are unacceptable. Take down anything you that violates copyright policies. UOJComm (talk) 22:30, 21 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Theroadislong Would you suggest we roll back the content to before the students added content last week? And then deal with these issues off the article? We will defer to your expertise and experience. Again, we are trying to improve this article in good faith. Thank you. UOJComm (talk) 22:48, 21 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
