Clarification in lede edit

Elphaba does not, in fact, have a last name in the book of the musical, does she? The lede is phrased to suggest that the last name is mentioned, but *I* don't remember hearing it. --Baylink 00:05, 8 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually, after 'One Short Day', the wizard acts Elphaba and Glinda to introduce themselves. Elphaba screeched something along the lines of: 'My name is Elphaba Thropp'....

Wicked summaries edit

I think it's fine to have a bit of a summary in regards to what happens to Elphaba in the Wicked novel and musical, but I'm not sure it's necessary to completely retell the plots of both, seeing as this article is supposed to be about Elphaba, not the works themselves. Both of the novel and musical have their own respective articles, so the extensive retelling-of-plot should be kept to those pages. Let me know what you think. Alex 04:28, 31 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree, the article is about Elphaba, not the retelling of 'Wicked'! TR_Wolf
The musical description is almost nothing but comparison to the novel. Something should be done about that. Sailorknightwing 03:16, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Elphaba's sex organs edit

There is no comment on the page about Elphaba's sexual organs (being scarred or perhaps hermaphroditic), despite all the attention paid to them in the book such as: the discussion in the intro, the uncertainty at birth, Fiyero not being allowed to see them, her own discussion on her gender (I think this occurred while still in school) and perhaps there are more instances. I think this is an important part of her identity, and part of one of the overall themes of the book. I'm not much for writing, but if someone else it up to it, I think it would be an informative addition. 24.240.37.142 07:54, 2 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. I added my attempt at an explanation. If someone can make it better or move it to a better place, please do. 204.210.250.233 (talk) 06:55, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Page name edit

I don't want to make the move unless I've brought it up first, but shouldn't this page be under the name Elphaba Thropp? That's the usual form for fictional characters. --UsaSatsui (talk) 08:08, 24 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's up for debate, because I think the use of "Thropp" as an actual surname is only in the musical, not in the novel (which, being the original work, I think would take superiority?). Alex (talk) 10:29, 28 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
She's referred to as "Elphaba Thropp" a few times in Wicked (though it's usually in the context of "Third Thropp Descending", meaning it could be a title rather than a last name), but she's called Thropp many, many times in Son of a Witch. --UsaSatsui (talk) 16:54, 28 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Mexico Cast Member edit

I have deleted the Mexican entry in the cast list for Elphaba. I haven't heard about a Wicked opening in Mexico but even if there is, it certainly won't have been confirmed yet. The Australian production isn't mentioned here so any future Mexican version shouldn't be either. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.68.159.69 (talk) 04:41, 14 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cast Replacement Information edit

Shouldn't this all be deleted since it's all present in Wicked cast lists? It makes the article look terrible. I'm de-redlinking enough as it is right now.--Conor (talk) 21:42, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I agree that it is unnecessary, although the notable (i.e., bluelinked) names could be listed in a paragraph. -- Ssilvers (talk) 04:29, 3 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Assessment edit

I have assessed this article as start class because it is almost entirely unreferenced. I also think that it contains a good deal of WP:Original research. -- Ssilvers (talk) 04:28, 3 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Woah. It all makes sense to me now.... But what if she hates water because in the book everyone was talking about drowning her when she was little because she was she was green and she understood it? I mean, it makes sense! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.120.98.146 (talk) 22:44, 3 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

High School Cast Member edit

Where it tells who has played Elphaba in the past, some IP address wrote in this " *Brittnay Sutherland (MVHS Grade 12)". I don't think that should be on the list. --4.153.8.130 (talk) 23:08, 26 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Japanese names edit

I think their "Christian" names should come first, because the article is in English, and it could cause some confusion. Because the article is English, we should conform it to fit our culture. If it was written in Japanese, I would say put all the "first" names last. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.210.250.233 (talk) 06:37, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Julia Murney edit

Who keeps saying Julia is returning to the tour? Stop. It isn't true. 71.66.230.44 (talk) 03:14, 6 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Cast lists edit

This section looks ridiculous currently. It's messy, there are some spelling errors, numerous understudies/standbys are missing from productions, and it looks really stupid to divide the cast list by production, because so many performers have been used in other productions. If this section IS needed (which I question), I say that there should be two sections, one listing past performers and the productions in which they appeared (in order) in parentheses, and another listing current performers and the productions in which they are currently appearing. Example: Current Performers

  • Nicole Parker (current Broadway)
  • Jennifer DiNoia (Chicago understudy, final Chicago standby, current Broadway standby)
  • Maria Eberline (original 1st national tour understudy, current Broadway understudy)

Past Performers

  • Shoshana Bean (Broadway standby, Broadway, 1st national tour)
  • Kristy Cates (original Broadway understudy, temporary 1st national tour, original Chicago standby, Chicago)
  • Eden Espinosa (original Broadway standby, temporary 1st national tour, Broadway, original LA, final LA)
  • Idina Menzel (workshops, San Francisco tryouts, original Broadway, original London)

...and so on.

I'll wait for other opinions before I pursue this. Apollinaris1993 (talk) 19:46, 9 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I agree. It was nice before, but someone changed it. Also, people need to stop adding people to future roles before it's confirmed!71.66.230.44 (talk) 11:08, 16 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Another beef I have with this section is the constant capitalization (which, I'm sorry, looks RIDICULOUS), as well as the need to arrange the "Former" list by production. I think alphabetizing works better, because so many performers in one production have performed in others. Now it's just confusing. Apollinaris1993 (talk) 17:35, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
The USJ girls are totally wrong. 76.241.91.25 (talk) 03:46, 5 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think that the individual actresses that have played or are currently playing Elphaba SHOULD be listed on this article as long as there is sufficient information to back it up. Unconfirmed and rumored castings should never be considered and high school casts should never be listed here. It would be highly illegal for a high school to put on an entire production of Wicked since the rights have not been released. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.38.118.73 (talk) 17:49, 4 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

difference between book and play in regards to the shoes edit

in the play Elphaba enchants the shoes Nessa was given however in the book Glinda does it. I have since changed the article to reflect that —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tydoni (talkcontribs) 15:15, 28 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Merge with wicked witch of the west? edit

Anyone? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.75.237.194 (talk) 00:23, 12 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well, they are the same person. --Trrri333 (talk) 00:11, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Within the continuity of Maguire's books and the musical, yes. However, the characters are sufficiently distinct that it makes sense to keep the articles separate; the figure of the Wicked Witch of the West has nearly a century of literary and cultural history prior to Maguire's revisionism, and Elphaba (of the books and the musical) is notable in her own right. It's a bit like Zeus and Jupiter; in narrative terms, and to a Roman like Virgil, they're the same figure, but there are different narrative and mythological traditions associated with each, so we have two articles. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 04:12, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Request for Comments edit

There is an RfC on the question of using "Religion: None" vs. "Religion: None (atheist)" in the infobox on this and other similar pages.

The RfC is at Template talk:Infobox person#RfC: Religion infobox entries for individuals that have no religion.

Please help us determine consensus on this issue. --Guy Macon (talk) 22:35, 24 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
