My main intention in creating this page is having a place to put cultural references. Most likely, history will be the only other area of significance, so I copied the history section from selective mutism. Unfortunately, elective mutism will no longer automatically redirect to selective mutism, but hopefully people will be looking up the correct term, anyway! I am a speech and language therapist and am concerned that some professionals are still using "elective mutism" incorrectly. I felt the page needed clarifying to state that this term is no longer appropriate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fayefox (talkcontribs) 16:41, 8 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Likely I Myself Am An Elective Mutist edit

Oddly I am well-known for being highly outspoken in my _writing_ - perhaps "outwritten"? - but in meatspace it is common for me to go for days without speaking other than in the very-must perfunctory ways, as when ordering coffee before I spend the entire day and well into the night mostly writing, without speaking.

It happens that I myself had - and still _have_ - a very vocal mother and a largely absent father. In our Nuclear Family, management of us kids was definitely my mother's responsibility; my father mostly kept to himself or hung out with Mom but only very rarely either myself or my older sister. It was only long after my father passed away that I was overcome with grief to realize that much of what my father _did_ want to say was either Classified by the US Navy, or that my father himself regarded as too horrifying to ever speak of, as is often the case for those who have fought in a war - Vietnam for him.

Again oddly, I'm quite a good as well as experienced public speaker, but my actual experience of doing so is quite unlike that of regular human conversation, rather for me to speak before a crowd feels much the same as for me to write an essay then post it on my website. 70.102.74.164 (talk) 13:23, 28 February 2019 (UTC) User_Talk:MichaelCrawfordReply

This is pretty poorly referenced and I haven't been able to find much on google. Where can I find more info on this topic so I can help out with editing? Hungryhippo67 (talk) 04:12, 13 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
