House names

All of the houses were former headmasters except for Webb. Talking of house names, I noticed Webb and Terry have now become Burton and Jackson (presumably the latter is named after the headmaster who recently left). Out of curiosity, which of these used to be Webb and which used to be Terry?

The headmaster when I was there (c.1984-1990) was Michael Burton Brown; I presume house name came from there. IIRC, the houses were named ofter animals (Beaver, Otter?) then. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.98.70.139 (talk) 16:55, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

Redirect

I have reverted the redirect as this school potentially requires further investigation to see if it merits a standalone article. There are three notable alumni. The school was also requisitioned during the war by the army: [1].

Why don't you take it to AfD? Thats the proper procedure. BTW, given that I have moved info from this article into the Farnham article, they should either be reverted together or not at all. The discussion can still continue with the merge intact. It doesn't need a reversion to continue. So I have reverted your restore of unreferenced information. I have reverted the redirect as this school appears to merit a standalone article. There are three notable alumni. The school is located in Frensham Place which is a historic building. Date of foundation ?

The article gives the date of 1906, but there's commentary in the NYT (see [4]) which suggests that the school existed during the late 19th century. --He to Hecuba (talk) 16:42, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

I got the date of foundation from the inspection report but the inspector is not necessarily going to be an expert on the school history and it's quite possible that the school existed before this time, and perhaps under a different name. It might have been known as a National School or an Industrial School. I'm afraid I don't have access to the NYT> Dahliarose (talk) 16:57, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

I think the date in the inspection report is wrong. A former head of the school Richard Frederick Rising is listed in the Cambridge Alumni as "Joint Head Master of Edgeborough School, Guildford, -1903-" (Source Information: Ancestry.com. Cambridge University Alumni, 1261-1900 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 1999. Original data: Venn, J. A., comp.. Alumni Cantabrigienses. London, England: Cambridge University Press, 1922-1954.) A Arthur Henry James then became head from 1906 to 1933. There's also a Joseph Vivian Thomas who was" Vice-Principal of Edgeborough School, Guildford, 1893". The somewhat illustrious Thomas Claude Robson was Adm. pens. at TRINITY, June 15, 1891. [2nd] s. of Dr John Henry (1861), of ‘Edgeborough,’ Guildford. Surr. B. [May 13], 1872 at Guildford. School, his father's. Hmm, it would be interesting to find out the location of the previous school buildings...difficult to though without access to the right books. These local history topics are very difficult to research unless you live close to the area. --He to Hecuba (talk) 22:08, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

I have come across references to an Edgeborough House in Guildford which seems to be a nursing home but I can't find any sources online to link it with the school. This article really needs a local editor. Dahliarose (talk) 22:39, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Have we verified that the Farnham and Guildford references are referring to the same thing? Sounds to me like different institutions. Fmph (talk) 07:21, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

The inspection report tells us that the school was founded in 1906 in Guildford and the school later moved to Farnham, so it seems logical to assume that the school would derive its name from its original location in Guildford. It seems to have started in the home of the parents of Thomas Claude Robson, and 1906 might be the date of the foundation of a school on its own premises. There was an Edgeborough Estate in Guildford that was sold in 1883 [5].Dahliarose (talk) 12:46, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

A report dated May 14 1891 signed bt John ?M Robson indicates that he was tutor to a Sholto James Gordon Douglas in Edgeborogh, Guildford at that time. Shipsview (talk) 17:48, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

Merge with Farnham

This article is tagged for a merge with Farnham. I oppose that idea, especially since this article has been greatly improved since the recent AfD discussion. --DThomsen8 (talk) 15:21, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

  • I see no need for a merge either. There is far too much content to make a merge a practical proposition. A merge with Farnham would also be inappropriate as the school was located in Guildford until 1939 and many of the alumni would have attended the school when it was in Guildford and not in Farnham. The Afd closer made very clear in his close that his 'keep' should not be seen as precluding a future consensual merge. I still believe there is little notable other than perhaps some historicity in the building itself. There was a proposal under discussion in the AfD to move the history section to Frensham Place, add an alumni category, and merge the remainder into Farnham. Peter Pan

I recall the headmaster (Burton Brown) recounting a tale that J. M. Barrie used to visit Frensham Place as he was writing Peter Pan. There was a tree house (or similar) in the grounds and it was this that gave the inspiration for the Wendy House in Peter Pan. Mind you, it all could be rubbish and I cannot find anything to corroborate it... Hennahairgel (talk) 17:07, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

Many people also won’t know that the magically famous story of ‘Peter Pan’ was written whilst J. M. Barrie occupied Black Lake Cottage on the Tilford Road.
