Please explain UTM

Can someone please explain the concept of "UTM" (Unidad Tributaria Mensual) in the article? Something I read explained it as "a currency unit, expressed in Chilean pesos, adjusted monthly in line with CPI". But I don't know if it is adjusted up or down, why it is adjusted or its use.

NAFTA; debt level

If Chile already has free trade agreements with the US, Canada and Mexico, why doesn't it belong to the NAFTA, as it was the original proposal almost 10 years ago?

Also, the phrase: The combined public and private foreign debt was roughly 50% of GDP at the end of 2000, low by Latin American standards. seems incorrect. It might be low compared to Argentina and Brazil, but not to Mexico and Costa Rica.

FTA

Chile tried to sign the Nafta in 97 but US Congress was against during the last 90's Having seen that, Chile began to sign trade agreements with(Mex and Canada) And only when the 'fast track'(a tool to sign FTA's quickly by US) was approved in 2002 (expires in 2007) Chile could sign a bilateral FTA with the US. Due to that, Chile has free trade with NAFTA but is not a member.

The debt in 2005 is 39%/GDP (private 80% + public 20%) debt svce: 12%

The public debt of Chile is currently slightly above 9 billion of dollars, if you compare this with the current GDP of 115 Billion dollars (2005), its not even 10%.

The public debt remains arround 9 billion $ today. GDP increased to 164 billion now, public debt now represents about 5,5% of the total GDP. --194.203.215.254 (talk) 11:41, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Economy in the Pinochet (post 1973 - late 1980s) era missing

The article doesn't talk about the period 1973-late 80s (called "Miracle of Chile"). It should either mention that in the body or incorporate elements into the main article. • I disagee. I think they should be kept separate. "Miracle of Chile" is more philosphical and academic, with an economist's viewpoint. This article discusses the more practical aspects of the economy. They have different audiences. Combining them will diminsh both. Andrew8 13:34, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
• Keep seperate. As others have mentioned, this is a historical event with a LOT of academic debate associated with it. There are already too many articles dealing with this topic (Economic history of Chile, Economy of Chile, History of Chile, Chile under Pinochet, Chile pension system, Chicago Boys and so on). • I disagree, the articles should stay separate. "Miracle of Chile" can be expanded by adding needed references and a well documented criticism section. Examples of countries or regional blocs featuring economic periods include: Celtic Tiger, Greek economic miracle, Baltic Tiger, and the Four Asian Tigers. Gini

The article list a number calling it the Gini Coefficient, but I think it should really read "Gini index." The coefficient has a value between 0 and 1, multiplying by 100 gives the index. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.206.222.20 (talk) 16:11, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Since the article is about the economy of Chile, it should take into account Chile´s distribution of wealth instead of the Inequality of the Human Development Index. Economic variables aside, the latter is calculated with variables which aren´t strictly economic.--Rivet138 (talk) 22:02, 25 August 2013 (UTC)

Plagiarism?

I don't want to sound alarmist or anything, but has anyone else noticed the resounding similarities between this article and the CIA World Factbook's entry on Chile's economy? Quoted from https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ci.html:

While it is true that the CIA waves copyright on the "World Factbook" and it may not be strictly illegal as it stands it is none the less plagiarism if credit is not given. Sound economic policy?

Re: The opening paragraph of the policy section which begins:

"Sound economic policies, maintained consistently since the 1980s, have contributed to steady economic growth in Chile... " This sounds reads like an editorial remark rather than a neutral point of view. I suspect that those who bother to check will find that most performance metrics for Chile correlate much better with world market prices for copper, a key Chilean export, than with any Chilean domestic policy or policy change. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.38.196.235 (talk) 22:19, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Significant improvements

During this week I will be preparing some modifications to this article. Specifically, the Economic policies section might be a little bit disorganized and important policies are not adequately represented. I am therefore working on developing subsections on monetary (e.g. central bank’s objectives and instruments), fiscal (e.g. taxation, expenditures, sovereign wealth funds, structural balance rule) and trade policy (e.g. adding information on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the Pacific Alliance and other ongoing and recently finished negotiations), in order to help the reader gather a more comprehensive perspective. This would involve some re-arranging of existing work in the sections of Economic policy and Foreign trade, in order to avoid duplication. I will also try to update some information that is a bit outdated, as well as other minor edits in existing sections.

I am open to comments, suggestions or any other reactions and would especially appreciate any feedback if I make mistakes. I will endeavor to keep a NPOV and reliable sources behind my work, while being careful of copyright issues.

Nice to have people willing to do great improvements. The only recommendation I think is good to remember is to cite works properly (not with bare urls etc.).
